27 is pretty good, many schools want 25+ on the ACT. However, if you are looking at selective or elite schools then you are probably shooting for a 30.

That is how it was explained to me by my students who were discussing their ACT results before class started the other day.

I got a 29 three times on that damn test. I wanted a 30 because apparently that’s where a lot of scholarship money comes into play.

That score should be fine for a lot of decent schools though. I do recommend taking it again though, some schools will let you submit multiple tests and they’ll take the best from each category to boost your score.

Also, you are like me in that math killed the score.

I got a 26 the only time I took it and my technical college didn’t even make me take any entrance exams because of it. My brother got his results yesterday and the little shit beat me with a 29.

It says you’re 86th percentile nationally and 90th percentile for your state for composite score, so I would say you did quite.

If you take it again, I’m sure you could easily improve in writing and science. Just do a little research on some sample essays to see what they’re looking for. ACT essay graders have a little different requirements than SAT essay graders so keep that in mind. I think the style and the way you present your points is slightly more important than the content of the essay itself. Just present a simple argument, provide a little bit of context, provide some nuance with a counterargument, and tie it up with a nice conclusion. I know I’m making it sound way easier than it is, but once you get used to the writing formula they want its pretty straightforward. Writing was the weakest section for me when I first took the ACT too.

Also when I took it, though it was quite a few years ago, the key to the science section was to not get hung up reading the paragraphs but instead read the questions first, use the charts to answer simple questions, and then just scan the blocks of text third for any remaining questions. I had a 35 overall and a 36 in the science that way.

Sorry for all of the unsolicited advice, really don’t mean to be rude.

I never took the ACT, only the SAT. In fact, when I was in high school I can’t say I remember anyone who took the ACT. I’m in the northeast though. Doing a Wikipedia search the SAT/ACT map looks an awful lot like the Trump/Clinton breakdown. Not meaning anything political by it, I just found it interesting, that’s all.

I got a 26 almost five years ago, and it was enough to get me into UTSA and UNT.
