You’ll just need a new USB port for your car if you want Apple CarPlay, because Apple is a terrible company.
And it needs to be downloaded to a 32gb USB stick, and not over WiFI as originally promised.

It looks like my wife’s Explorer is running abandonware. I checked for compatible updates and there aren’t any. The last compatible update was in 2015.

Yeah, unfortunately only 2016 and up is compatible.
