TIL: These Pontiac G6 Wheels Are Actually Steelies

...with plastic covers. I learned this because 2 of them are shattered and one’s completely missing.

Kinja'd!!!

The steelies underneath look like this:

Kinja'd!!!

It is the saddest G6 I’ve ever seen or ridden in. The trans shifts super rough, it’s terribly out of alignment and the wheels are horrendously out of balance. It shook so damn bad. (Also, a mystery clacking sound coming from the rear, possibly the wheel cover flapping around)

Her defense was “It still drives, so I’ll keep driving it” .

This is why I’m in favor of draconian vehicle inspections. Fuck that shit.

I don’t want Germany levels of road worthiness inspections, but some base minimum would be nice

The wheel covers were a big thing for American companies in the mid-2000s. The Malibu, Fusion, and Avenger all haf the same thing on certain trim levels.

+1 for vehicle inspections. But not to the level where a car fails because the IAC valve is messing up occasionally and setting a CEL even though it has 0 bearing on how the car runs or drives. Check for rust, check chassis condition in general, check brakes, bearings, tires, wheels, shocks, springs, bushings, leaks, exhaust, seatbelt function, all exterior lights, glass (pitting/cracks that could impair vision), and ensure body panels aren’t going to suddenly fly off the car.

Best looking steelies I’ve seen in ages. Reminds me of Audi quattro wheels from the ‘80s without the high cost and small diameter.

...those are cool steelies, though.

If they were clean like the one above, not rusty like they were IRL.

Exactly. I saw some on a car at work the other day and liked the shape, but it was a typical clapped-out GM product and was on its last legs, and it wouldn’t be too long before it rusted out and was abandoned on the side of the road somewhere.

Get a fresh set, powder coat the fuck out of them, and install a nice polished trim ring, all on a car that’s worth keeping alive.

Quite a few vehicles have wheels like that nowadays. I suppose it’s much more cost effective to put a plastic skin on a steelie.

We have mandatory vehicle safety inspections every two years here in Nova Scotia. It used to be every YEAR, but they changed it a few years back. There are times I wish it was still every year...

I think that’s a pretty good metaphor for the G6. It looks nice on the outside (when not beat to shit), but once you sit inside one, let alone drive one, you realise just how bad they actually are. Typical mid-2000s GM really.

This sounds like my experience with every G6 I’ve been in, including when they were new.

I’m not even joking.

A friend in high school had one, but he took really good care of it, it still fell apart way too quickly.

The past two (at least) generations of Prius have had plastic covers over much more attractive wheels (presumably for aero reasons), though I think the Prius wheels are aluminum rather than steel.

How does one end up riding in such a shitty Pontiac? Please tell me Uber/Lyft doesn’t have drivers in these sad-sack mobiles. I’ve ridden three times and gotten a recent Maxima, a new Accord, and a new Corolla so my outlook is pretty bright. A G6 though, fuck that shit.

Ah, yes. Pretty much all the cars on that platform at the time (G6, 7th generation Malibu, and Aura) with the exception of Saabs had those on the base models. The covers were all a different design, but all made to fit on the same good looking steelie.

They look better with the cover off, just like a second generation Prius alloy wheel looks with the ugly plastic ring removed.
