Who thought this was a good idea?

Kinja'd!!!

Why does a cabin air filter change require the removal of an interior panel? Why does the filter door require 5 torx screws, two of which requires quarter turns of a hex key?

AND FINALLY: WHY DO I HAVE TO CRUSH THE FILTER TO GET IT TO GO IN?

Because then your average owner won’t diy it and will instead pay 2 hours of shop time plus full price for the filter at the dealer. Or, they’ll not realize it’s there or ignore it, leading to premature blower/resistor failure, leading to either a huge repair bill or a new car purchase. All wins for the manufacturer and it’s dealer network.

Or engineers are just assholes sometimes.

Not sure if Mazda had a hand in that, but on the 3 and 5 its 10000000 times worse because you have to remove the fuse block/body control module to get at the damn door thats in a similar position.

I actually messaged a friend who is a Ford tech asking if I could be lazy and leave some screws out. The top two were pointlessly difficult. He said it was better to put them back :(

Well, the Fiesta is basically a Mazda 2, so yeah, I guess it’s Mazda.

Probably worried about it leaking air and potentially making the rest of the system less efficient/effective, or maybe causing rattling... or perhaps he’s just an honest and good tech who always tries to to the job right.

Because the cabin filter is close to the blower motor which we all know the rest of the car is built around as one does when engineering it in your living room.

Most cars have it behind the dash. At least from what I’ve seen. I feel this was specifically designed so that you go to the dealer.

Yeah, it’s just an old running joke that a bunch of people I knew had wrenching on cars both personally and professionally.

Because Ford.

Years ago when I worked in a body shop, Fords were always the biggest headaches. Almost everything seems to be put together with different types of fasteners. Often times on the same part.
