Fact: if your child ever acts aloof, you’re a terrible parent and your children should be taken away.

Pretty sure my 14-year-old thinks I’m the devil incarnate.

Wow I didn’t know you were literally Ted Cruz

I referred to my 4-year-old daughter as a teenager this morning. Went to wake her up at 8am to the loving response of “You — you go out of my room NOW. Where’s mommy?”

We’re in a pretty bad way when Ted Cruz looks like the lesser of evils.

Thank god for mothers. If it weren’t for my wife, my kids wouldn’t talk to anybody. She and my 14yo are particularly close.

The worst part is my son (6) — who has his own set of emotional distance and anger issues — is often referred to as my spitting image. That naturally means I have to deal with whatever he’s got going on. My answer to everything is “I’m gonna grab a beer and let’s go toss the football around!” (or change the oil or some other emotionally neutral “guy thing”). The other day we were splitting logs for our firepit...for later this year. Anything for some “father-son hard labor quality time.”

My older son deals with uncomfortable situations by not dealing with them at all and hoping they go away. Which exactly the way I was at his age. I think that fact that he is so much like me is one reason why we butt heads so often.

Yep. I’m totally unfair with my son and my wife calls me out on it all the time. I treat it like everything is his fault. It’s like my default position, but I’m working on it (as a kid, I was the oldest and got blamed for everything, so that stuck with me).

Very possible...do you like planes? Planes are cool.

Well, you’ve written about it before, so I remembered. Mine is a 2003.

It started as an object of hate, now I...well... I tolerate the shit out of it which is the most paradoxical possible way I can say it. We use it for everything and it’s just there. Never really breaks, just goes. It helps that I’ve started getting into more DIY maintenance, tranny fluid, oil changes, filters, etc. I like it slightly more than my 22cu ft upright freezer that sits next to it in the garage. It has 80 lbs of beef in it.

When my 03 was in the shop for an engine swap last summer (!!), they loaned me a 2017 maxed out Odyssey. I hated it. Heavy, thick, hard to see out of, inscrutable touch screen, massive pillars. The sun roof just seemed like a stupid afterthought in a vehicle of that size. Just a hole in the roof. For all its size, my 03 actually seems pretty spritely. This pig never seemed to get going. It drives, but I never felt like I was driving . My 03 has about 170k on it, and I’m not looking forward to replacing it. And the latest iteration of the Odyssey looks even worse. More Mazda than Honda. I may check out a Sienna, or even the Pacifica. Though I saw a Pacifica at Costco the other day and was immediately turned off by the dial shifter. I like something to hang my right hand on while I drive.

Yeah, I tried out the dial shifter in the Durango a couple years ago. My wife thought it was a safety hazard, but I didn’t mind it — actual manual shifting was done with paddles, which is decent.

I’d go Pacifica just from what I’ve seen. I was also very impressed with the Sedona — the base $23k model was at least as well done as our mid-$30s Ody, albeit with simpler options. You can really see the Audi DNA in their design and materials. I just got over the overall car design pretty quickly.

I live on an interstate corridor to the Midwest, so sometimes the only way I get to see new domestic cars is when they have Michigan/Ohio/Indiana plates. Down here, almost everyone buys foreign-branded stuff (except trucks). I’ve seen probably 50 Pacificas on the road, but only 2-3 locally.

Here in Austin, I think I have seen 2 in months. It’s all SUVs and crossovers in my neck of the woods, neither of which I’d like to own. There’s nothing better than those big sliding doors when you have to load/unload kids.

Interesting. We have more than our share of SUVs and Crossovers, but Ody is actually something of a status symbol itself (as in “one of the only minivans people aren’t embarrassed to drive”). I see about 100 cars on the way to my son’s school every morning. About 20 are Odysseys, and half of those are identical to mine. We lose our car in parking lots all the time. Our Highlander-owning friends always talk about Minivan Envy but don’t quite want to take the plunge. Because their FWD unibody V6 is sportier and more offroady than our FWD unibody V6.
