So Voyager runs across an old pick up in space that Tom identifies as a “1936 Ford Pick-up”

Kinja'd!!!

Apparently in the communist utopia known as the Federation, Ford no longer exists, much less as household name. Hell, I don’t even think private companies exist anymore in the commie playground that is Earth.

Goddammit Harry, are you blind? First hover car? WTF do you think the wheels are for? For that matter they all seem confused as to what a car is. This scene just supports my hypothesis that the Federation brainwashes its citizens and selectively edits its past history to remove certain events/concepts/ideas that don’t mesh with its “enlightened philosophy”.

Probably by lacing the root beer.

Also apparently gasoline doesn’t build up deposits after being sealed in tank for a couple centuries.

Solar winds must have kept the battery charged too.

Tom’s love for old cars was a nice thing to see. Especially when they brought in his(?) old Camaro.

WTF do you think the wheels are for?

To be fair. In late 2016, early 2017, this is what constitutes a hoverboard.

Kinja'd!!!

It neither hovers or is a board.

THANK you. That has pissed me off since I first watched this episode.

Voyager - the one I hate.

In next Gen didn’t Riker invite someone to go stock car racing the next time they were back on Earth? ...it could have been Archer on Enterprise or someone else on Deep Space 9..?

I never viewed this episode as being good , but I loved it. It reminded me of me if I was on a starship.

“So is this an early hovercar?” “No, you’re about a century too early for that.”

Wait, so he’s saying that hovercars are only two decades away? LOL

I’m afraid we’re gonna keep using wheels for a long long time, buddy.

So Star Trek always did present the UFP as a Communist utopia on the inside confronting imperialist forces from the outside. I just glossed over that part and enjoyed it anyway.

If that’s a hoverboard, then I’m calling my car a hovercar.

It’s just weird that there are no companies. I mean Starfleet is also apparently the only design bureau for all Starfleet ships.

Exactly.

In Back To The Future the hover board, hovered, was propelled by one foot on the board and one pushing on the ground in the direction of parallel to the length of the board.

Kinja'd!!!

The hoverboard of 2016-7 has two wheels, is not a board but two pieces of plastic that is propelled at a right angle to the length of the board by having both feet on the board.

Kinja'd!!!

Right now. I want to just shout and then punch stupid people.

I loved that episode and I felt so smug and superior to those people who didnt know crap about cars and who are obviously better than me in every way. Also the one when he makes a camaro holo program and his wife is all jealous he spends so much time working on it.

In the vacuum of space? I’m frankly surprised the gas hasn’t all boiled off and seeped out, no tank is 100% sealed. Failing that, in the absence of gravity I can’t imagine it would settle out much at all, maybe separating into small deposit “bubbles” I suppose, but they would definitely behave differently than falling to the bottom as solids the way it does on earth.

Vacuum packing and freezing are two great ways to preserve things, and that’s what space is all about, right? There’s also very little to cause corrosion or otherwise. The air in the tires does surprise me a bit, though.

There are companies, they are just very small (think sole proprietorship or family business). There’s no incentive to create large ones. Earth is under a single government with every person on the planet living a first-world lifestyle, with education available to any level, so Starfleet is the last real bastion of regimented hierarchy among humans. It’s a place where those driven to compete go to compete with others driven to compete.
