I’m taking a dirt road out of the Smokies that connects directly to the Tail. I may drive a 5000 pound SUV but I’m going to throw it in sport mode and see what that 4.7 V8 can do in my GX. Seems like a shame to not drive the road while I’m there.

I might consider going there next year for Wookies in the Woods. Mostly R32 and Golf R but attended also by a few VR6 Corrado and A3. We had too much going on at home this year for me to leave.

I actually love taking SUV’s onto windy roads. You don’t need to go too fast to have a good time.
Just don’t let the momentum get the best of you in a set of switchbacks.

Enjoy. Now that I am spending time autocrossing I’m not sure I’m even going to take the time this year to go to TotD with my buddy who goes regularly. (Due to time and getting the challenging driving experience, even though they are different.)

Have fun! Watch for idiot truck drivers and other morons coming into your lane!
I’ve been a couple times and fortunately have avoided the circus every time I’ve been there (shoulder season weekdays both times) and it’s an awesome road.
But if it’s madness there, personally I’d just find another place to ride. It’s not like there aren’t dozens and dozens of other awesome roads in the area with far less notoriety.

I’ve talked to people who have done that ride multiple times, on all kinds of bikes. the guy who taught my skilled rider course a couple of weeks ago has done it three times on his Ultra Limited, with his wife riding pillion.
I don’t think I’ve got enough years left on this planet to gain the skill needed to ride that road safely.
