Error code P0456 - Evaporative Emissions System Leak Detected (Very Small Leak)

Well, guys, it happened. My first check engine light in almost 45,000 miles of driving my Mustang. Had Autozone read the code and it turned out to be P0456, which is apparently a notoriously rare code that many OEMs don’t even use. Autozone suggested that I replace the EVAP canister, but I’ve read online that it could be a leak literally anywhere in the EVAP system and even a Ford dealership would have a hard time nailing down the actual problem. And even fixing the leak wouldn’t fix whatever caused the leak, so fuck me. If anyone has any experience with EVAP issues, lemme know!

Could likely be the cap less fuel fill door. I think yo u still have the 1st gen design of that.

I’m dealing with this on a couple of my Ram C/V vans. One has 250k miles and the other is around 115k. I think we have fixed the higher mileage one, at least the check engine light hasn’t come back yet.

Hmm, okay, is there a good way to test for that? I haven’t gotten gas in like a week but the light came on yesterday. Wonder if the door could have just gotten loose or something...

I’ve been helping my brother-in-law chase one down. HE replaced his fuel cap with a junk yard one, then an official toyota one, and now going to try something else......

from what I understand it’s a problem but its not going to to cause harm to the vehicle

My fiancee’s ‘00 Camry had this light come on a little while ago. The car would hesitate, stall, etc. We changed the Evap canister...and the light came back within a couple weeks and it till stalls every now and then.

Honestly reading this relieves me in a way cause now I know we didn’t install the canister wrong. Reading this has also kinda freaked me cause now I’m seeing it could be anything.

This probably doesn’t help, but at least you know you’re not alone haha

Right, that’s what I’ve read too. My car doesn’t have a gas cap, and the capless filler door is like a $300 part. Thanks Ford.

That sounds like there may be some other issue in play because all I’ve read about this code is that it shouldn’t really affect the engine because the EVAP system is a closed system. I haven’t read or personally experienced any changes in throttle response, idle, or anything like that. :/

My friend has an Explorer and had that code, it was that cap less fuel filler. There was a TSB on it at the dealer.

As painful as it may be it might be dealer visiting time.

Yeah some more investigation needs to be done for sure. But its a 17 year old car with 5x the miles of yours so that’s to be expected.

I hope you find your issue. Having anything like that happen under 100k miles is pretty frustrating.

Had this light on/off on my Crown Vic since I bought it. I’ve gone through and cleaned out the EVAP system a couple of times. For the most part, I just use my code reader and turn the light back off.

Start with the fuel cap first, then check for torn or loose vacuum tubes in the engine bay. I just threw this code on my Wrangler last week. It’s not that rare.

A leaky evap cannister shouldn’t cause driveability issues. You might have a vacuum leak somewhere else.

Wipe off any gaskets, might just be a bit of crud keeping it from sealing.

Clean the seal surfaces for the fuel cap and reset the computer. Then drive for a while to see if the code comes back. If it comes back, take away the guesswork and have a dealer do a smoke test. They pressure test the system and even small leaks will usually appear. It could be anything from a fuel neck leak, cap, vent valve etc.

Evap faults are the second worst to diagnose behind only intermittent CAN faults. But I don’t know anything about how Ford sets their evap systems up, and there are quite a few variations, so I really can’t help you. Sorry. They also take specialized equipment to properly diagnose so your kind of shit outta luck. Unless you get lucky, do a visual inspection and find something amiss that way.

I wouldn’t necessarily have a problem with doing that since it’s not gonna damage the car, but I don’t know if I’d pass Maryland inspection like that.

Buy or borrow an OBD-2 code scan tool. There are apps for phone for code scanners and plug ins for bluetooth or wifi. If you have some car friends ask them, somebody might have a scanner. Basic ones on eBay are about $20.

I’m in MN where there are no inspections, so I can’t help you there. FWIW when I turn the light off it usually doesn’t come back for months.
