How are the roads? How active is the car culture? How non-active is law enforcement when it comes to messing with enthusiasts? How’s the local food and beer (especially of the vegetarian/pescetarian sort)?

The combination of it having the best average pay for Retail Mangement and housing costs that would put us in a shack up here in CT have my Girflriend and I thinking about maybe moving down there.

Anybody got any experience?

Worst drivers on the planet! Also a big heroin epidemic. Other than those two flaws, it’s a great town. I’m a student at UNCW and have been having a great time! Plenty of restaurants and bars!

I live vaguely near Wilmy and been there many times.

It’s a party town so the cops are always out as so far as I’ve seen in my experiences. Car scene is good. Food downtown is delicious. I’m sure a pescatarian could be fine in a coastal town. Not expensive to live down there, either. You’ve got plenty of the regular stuff Wally World, Target, Applebees, etc, etc. It’s a pretty cool place to be. Just be prepared for a good storm evey once in a while.

Very cool. I went to Cape Fear Tech and UNCW in the 70s. Worked at surf shops. Spent a lot of time at Red Dogs and the Palm Room. I knew Roy who owns one of shops when he worked for Woody at Surf N Stuff. I am old timer beach bum that grew up and moved away. I really miss that place.

Its a pretty nice place. Has some issues as all places seem to these days. I lived in the area at times between 1975-1978 then again 1980-81. My wife and I have considered that if we ever move south from Ohio its one of the few places we would consider. I could never move back home to the Outer Banks and SC isn’t exactly what we like. The combination of Wilmington and Wrightsville Beach is pretty inviting. There is some car culture. Wilmington has a great river front developed with great breweries and restaurants. The old south feel is great in the neighborhoods down in that area. We get back down every so often to NC and are trying to plan a trip back this summer.

Moved from Western ny to nc a few years ago. You will not regret it. I love it here (Raleigh area) and we went from just getting by and owning a 50 year old house with everything wrong with it to a brand new built for us home in an amazing neighborhood full of young like minded families. That alone was worth it. Never mind the weather. One thing I’ll say about beach towns is they are kind if a gift and curse. On one hand it’s the beach! It’s a cool atmosphere/culture on the other hand there is a group of people who go there specifically to blow off steam and act like an ass. Good luck!

We lived in Greenville NC for 5 years, and every time we visited Wilmington we described it as “everything that we wished Greenville was.” It’s a pretty great area. I can’t speak much to car culture, but like anywhere in Eastern NC you only need to go a few minutes out of town to find a deserted road. You won’t find much in the way of elevation changes though.

Every time I visit Wilmington my friends warn me about the county having the highest rate of car accidents per capita in the state. I’m told to wait several seconds after the light turns green before moving due to red light runners. And the beach towns can be offensively aggressive on parking enforcement.

But I still like to visit.

Wilmington is a great coastal town - feels a little more urban/eclectic than a typical beach town, but that’s probably because UNCW is there.

One thing you may want to consider is actually living across the border in SC - they generally pay fewer taxes than we do in NC.

Downtown is really nice. The roads are nice and smooth but they’re all flat and straight as an arrow.

It’s a pretty cool town. Not sure if I’m gonna stay after college, so I’m making the most of it for now!

Wife and I had family connections on Outer Banks but almost all them have left the area. With that in mind we decided if we ever sell our house and move South, the Wrightsville or Carolina Beach area would likely be our new home. I still have one surfboard made by Dave Endress in the 70's. I’d probably start surfing again if we moved.

Both are great areas! Carolina beach would probably be more bang for your buck, plus if you own a 4WD, or AWD vehicle, then you’d be close to Fort Fisher where you are allowed to drive on the beach.

I used to surf the Cove at Fort Fisher back when I was down there. Loved surfing the rock area , reminded me of my trips to California and Baja.
