So there is a chance that I might be getting a promotion at work because someone above me got fired. On the plus side I’d be making a lot more money. On the down side, my current 2 mile round trip commute would become a 62 mile round trip commute. Which means the Galant’s 24 miles per gallon of Premium wouldn’t be ideal. Plus it’s not that comfortable, and doesn’t have a working radio.

Anyway I’m not going to sell the Galant it’s too special. But I do think I it would be fun to get a second car. And the more I shop around the more I keep coming back to a 2001-2004 VW TDI. Most likely a Beetle, purely because they are the cheapest.

‘’Tis car happens to be in my home town too.

The other options would be, a 92-2000 Civic hatch, a Yaris(yawn), a first gen Fit(meh), or a first gen XB(over priced). The advantage the VWs have over all of these is comfort. Heated leather seats, quieter ride, better stereo(if you gen the Monsoon system like this one).

There are plenty of comfy cars, and plenty of cars that get great MPGs, but the TDI is about the only one that can give you both. Plus the added bonus of having some tuning potential as well.

do it. They’re enjoyable and the beetles are theft-proof

Theft-proof because no one wants to be seen in one?

TDIs are literally the easiest manual trans car to drive. Just slowly let off the clutch and it has enough torque it will not die.

Not sure, I’ve never personally experienced one, but a friend had a Beetle of the same vintage with a petrol engine and had she no shortage of issues with it.

Looks to be a good value. Could be fun. Or maybe you could move closer to work and save all that driving.

Or maybe you could move and buy the beetle anyway. :)

You do realize that if you buy a bright yellow Beetle you’ll have to be seen in a bright yellow Beetle, right?

My brother and sister in law. Both have 02 TDIs. A Jetta and a Golf, they’ve had issues, but they also have well over 200,000 miles. The most common issues have been wheel bearings.

The Jetta is currently making 180hp and 300lb/ft of torque at 26 pounds of boost to, which is fun.

I do. I’m okay with that. I’ll have to buy more yoga pants tho.

Moving is a possibility, but not a likely one. If I move closer to the new location we also move away from my wife’s work, and kids school. Plus houses in between the two towns are at least 150,000.

Make sure to leave money in the budget for giant daisy magnets and headlight eyelashes.

VR6 swap? Not a TDI, but it would be like an almost RSI

Grabbing one of these and modding it to the point of crushing sti owner’s hopes and dreams has been a goal of mine for awhile. Preferably yellow or pink, with the matching colored daisy wheels and no visible signs of modification.

Get the VW. It’s unique.

Doesn’t look like it as the RSI has a different cluster with side by side tach and speedo unlike the standard car with a giant speedo.

My brother in law has a 02 TDI Jetta with about everything you can do without sacrificing major, MPGs, and drivability. It’s still a monster that make very fun noises. Watching a boost gauge go up to 26psi is fun too.

A 2003-2006 Hyundai Elantra GT or Limited will get you a manual with good mpg and leather, but I don’t think heated seats were available.
