Calling all of you Edelweiss lovers: near the end of June, we’ll be heading to the Alps for a short getaway. More details and registration form after the jump!
From 23 until 25 June, we’ll blast through Austria, Switzerland and Italy, crossing some of the most legendary mountain passes while doing so. The provisional route can be found below and on Furkot , but names like the Stelvio and the Timmelsjoch should wet your appetite nicely.

I’m really on the fence about this one; I don’t want to just ride shotgun this time. Renting a car is a farce under 21 and I don’t know how quick I can organize a car of my own by then.

I haven’t decided what I’ll drive yet, but since it’s the alps and there are a nice opportunities to go hiking, I might take the Pajero with doggo and roof tent, that way there wouldn’t be an issue with housing. The only issue II see with that idea is that if we drive like last time, I might have issues keeping up :)
Also, for those of you coming through Alsace on you way, feel free to come by check your tire pressure, adjusting your fluids, have a beer. I live around
here

Also, at 20 years old you can still easily and cheaply rent cars like the VW Golf, Audi A1 and Mercedes A-Class. 3 days for roughly €100 in Würzburg or (possibly cheaper as it saves 500+ kms on the rental) Munich. This is including “junge Fahrer-Gebühr”. Should be perfectly fine, shouldn’t it? I googled for a short while and a rental agency like Europcar rents those cars for drivers as young as 18.
edit: I just saw that you can rent an Abarth 500C in Innsbruck at Europcar. Minimum age 18. Price for 3 days including young driver premium: €135. Or the “Abarth Spider” ( Abarth Fiat 124 ) for €213. Both with unlimited kms, both manual. Innsbruck can be reached by train directly from Munich and is on our route (1.5 hours from the starting location), or you might be able to catch a ride from one of us to a rental place somewhere.

Thing is, I need a ‘yes’ from my parents (don’t laugh, I still live at home with them) and it doesn’t seem that likely.
Besides that, I assume I need a credit card for renting a car or am I wrong? Because I thought about renting in Munich (Innsbruck would also work) because train rides are cheap. Wouldn’t mind sharing a rental too but I can’t promise me taking part just yet.

What’s between you and your parents is between you and your parents, but if there’s no firm NO let me or other participants know if they are skeptical about certain issues. Depending on what it is we might be able to tackle those problems.

We had Maxitwingo keeping up, so you should be fine. ;) Tbh, it’ll be a bit more relaxed I think, since there’s quite some difference between German/Belgian hills and Italian cliffsides. There are also a couple of shortcuts you could take if you want to do some longer hikes.
I might take you up on that offer by the way!

Agreed, although I’d gladly pay extra for the abarth 124. Looks better plus RWD. We’d get a €21 or so discount as well as we’re 21+.

What day will you be there? I’m thinking about going as I have 2 weeks between 2 easy exams and I don’t want to overprepare. If I can keep the costs low that is, as I have to save a bit of money for the internship I’m going to do starting late summer.

Could work- I think I can add an additional driver for free to an Avis rental, just leaving the young driver surcharge which is around €12/day. Only thing is I’ll be getting in to Munich late Thursday then driving to the start on Friday morning, then doing the reverse on Sunday for a early Monday flight.

I’m one of the people who goes on this trip and I currently live in Munich (despite not being German). No idea if you want to do some shooting in this area though. The only car I’ve got here in Germany is a Peugeot 406 coupe (with 302k km on it).
