Cause I just order a set of pads and rotors for the GX. a reasonable $260, which is what I got off the truck on account of the bad brakes (well. $250).

Kinja'd!!!

Looking forward to getting it baselined and ready for the next 60k miles.

on the list

Transmission fluid flush (kinda of a pain since is “sealed” for the life of the vehicle)

T-case fluid

Front and rear diff fluid

Brakes rotors and pads

Brake flush (kinda needs it from the smell of whats in there)

Tires

plus stuff like floor mats and a spare key.

EBC is a good brand. I don’t hear too many negative comments about their products.

I can report three things I liked:

1: they are available on amazon

2: they have clear definitions of “levels” between their kits so you know which is the better ones etc

3: they worked perfectly, and seemed an improvement over stock and the other rando brands I’d gotten previously.

I’ve heard/seen bad feedback on the GreenStuff pads being too dusty. I had RedStuff on my old Mazdaspeed 6 and liked them a lot, including their low dust. Track people have had some issues with the RedStuff not holding up on the track and the YellowStuff which are the more dual-purpose track day pad aren’t as good as competing pads.

Basically the reds are the best EBC pads at least for their intended purpose of a fast road pad.

These look like reds. So thats nice. Frankly. I can deal with dust, they just need to work, last and be quiet.

I usually go with all Centric stuff on all my cars. I tracked my Subie and used Centric premium rotors and Stop Tech pads (high end Centric). I think EBCs you’re throwing some cash away... just my $.02

I’ve heard mostly good things about EBC products. Can’t think of anything negative specifically off the top of my head, especially for a commuter/DD GX.

Transmission fluid flush (kinda of a pain since is “sealed” for the life of the vehicle)

As the clutch packs wear and the fluid becomes dirtier and grittier, this grit can help worn clutches grab. I don’t fully understand all of the voodoo black magic that lies inside that box, but I’ve heard that if the fluid has never been changed and you’re looking at a “high mileage” (don’t know what kind of numbers this equates to) that flushing the fluid could remove all the grit and cause slipping in gear. I’d absolutely check with a slushbox expert and ask around before cracking it open and flushing. Worst case: couldn’t hurt to ask.

https://forum.ih8mud.com/threads/ws-atf-flush-procedure.447398/ seems helpful though.

cheaper than OE, so it can’t be that bad. I don’t need killer stopping performance, the brakes are pretty stout as is (quad piston 13.4 inch fronts and dual piston 12.8 rear) I just need a reliable replacement.

I’ve heard that too, and I think its crap. If your clutches need suspended dust to perform, you’ve waited too long to replace the fluid and they are just worn out. I have 290k on my transmission and I’ve had the fluid replaced regularly and it shifts hard and reliable.

EBC is a british company. Ive ran their stuff before for track days. Ive always liked them.

Their stock replacement stuff is a minor upgrade over stock. The higher up stuff gets a little pricey for daily driver use.

Few of my work truck run their towing pads, since they claim they shorten stopping distance.

On my other thread, the Fit one, i just went with the 2nd option on Rock Autos site, the power stop one click brake kit. Red powdercoated calipers, pads(ceramic/carbon fiber), drilled/slotted rotors and misc brake hardware(probably misc metal clips for the calipers) all for 210 with 40 dollar core charge, 170 without.

Thats for my 08 Fit. I dont know what theyd charge for your needs.

I fully agree! Was well overdue for a rebuild at that point anyways. I’ve taken to a basic drain and fill every 2-4 engine oil changes on the 80. Drain plug is just like the engine oil, drops about 4 quarts. Refills through the dipstick per FSM.

I believe the knock on the greens is they have a lot of dust and not much in the way of upgraded stopping power over typical stock replacement pads.

I had Power Stop Z36 heavy duty truck & tow pads on my WK. They were pretty good, but I’m more used to comparing differences between performance car brakes and not heavy SUVs with heavy A/T tires.

I quick priced out the Z36 pads and DuraGo replacement rotors on RockAuto and they’re $175 shipped. If you wanted something even cheaper.

Yeah, it’s like the fear over synthetic engine oil “causing” leaks. It doesn’t cause a problem; it just exposes an issue that was already there.

Didn’t know that about bike rotors... good to know...

But yeah, the guys in question are usually mega snobs about components.. I mentioned EBC brakes one day expecting a bunch of shit-talking at the mention, and they actually had good things to say.. Including that if they’re not using some techy-tech ceramic brakes then they use EBC’s......

Are your brakes worn out, or just warped? Mine are warped/unevenly bedded, and it’s so annoying because there’s good life left in them. The lugs were WAAAAY overtorqued, so I think that had something to do with it.

Diffs, T-case and transmission are pretty easy, so long as you have the hand pump. You will wear out your hand/arm, though. I ran 14 quarts of Toyota WS through mine last month. “Flush” method works well. I dropped my pan, replaced the filter, and then flushed through the heat exchanger return line. Could get about 4 quarts at a time with this method.

05/17/2017 at 13:06, STARS: 0

I think for the transmission I will do the 2 quarts per oil change route. I may be convinced to drop the pan but that sounds so tedious.

Brakes pulse and squeak so I think they are both “warped” and spent.

No dipstick. For a period of time, Toyota said “lifetime fluids”

So now the method to check the level is to jumper the OBD2 plug, engage a diagnostic mode, and warm up the engine until a light turns on, but doesn’t flash (that’s too warm)

Then you can pull out the overflow plug, and let the excess drain out. If nothing comes out, wait for it to cool and add more fluid.

It. Is. Awful.

To answer your question about EBC:

I used the SUV Greenstuff 6000 pads on the V8 4runner. I want to say they lasted 8,000 miles or so. I complained to EBC and they told me “they’re high performance pads, you shouldn’t have expected long life out of them”

Yeah, the dipstick method is for the 80.

I can’t believe there isnt one on the GX. I’m sorry for your pain!

Your previous owner and mine must have gotten the same brakes.

When I do change, I’m going Centric Premium (black e-coated on non-friction surface) rotors with Akebono pads. They were great in the 4R

EBC pads are great. Yamahog runs them on her Camaro for track purposes (bluestuff) and I want to pick up a pair of Yellowstuff pads for the Monte.

I use bluestuff and they have great bite, also dusty and noisey but I would think the more street-friendly pads aren’t so bad. I’m about halfway through the set I put on sometime last season, and they have at least two track days and some daily driving mileage on them. Follow the bed-in instructions and should be good.

So far so good on my slotted front and rears on the ST, I always toyed with putting some on the Disco. Running redstuff pads, had some major fade after following a less talented/new to the road we were on STi driver the other day.

I got YellowStuff for the Town Car last year, matched to centric blanks with ATE Typ 200 fluid. Lasted about a year and performed well, but at $100 for a set of pads let’s just say when it came time to replace I just went with whatever autozone had on hand. Initial bite is not as good, and I can tell they don’t handle heat nearly as well, but damnit, Bultaco, it’s a daily not an autocrosser.
