Kinja'd!!!

It’s simple- “Today is overcast, mid-50s with scattered showers, but we PROMISE tomorrow will be nicer!”

Tomorrow comes... “Today is overcast, mid-50s with scattered showers, but we PROMISE tomorrow will be nicer!”

I’d be better with an honest forecast that gave no false hope... “Today, the weather is shit. It’ll be shit tomorrow, and the next day. We might see a sunny day in mid July, but it’ll immediately go back to being shit.”

The locals don’t help, either... “This winter has been really bad, it’s not normally like this!” Just like last winter, and the winter before...

I miss Florida, where I didn’t have to be told to take 2,600 mg of vitamin D from a bottle every day.

I’m just cringing at all the 90+ temps in our forecast down South.

Pick your poison. In Florida, it’s always “20% chance it will rain every single day, and if it does, it’s like Armageddon for 15 minutes. Then back to a steam room.”

Haha the long range forecast after today looks amazing. My wife has declared that winter is finally over and summer starts tomorrow. Of course this means that by Saturday we’ll be drenched in the rain again.

Would you rather: a big, badass thunderstorm rolling through every afternoon, or 10 straight months of overcast skies, obnoxious dizzle and 50 degrees? I think my biggest beef with the weather here is that nothing interesting ever happens... We might hear a distant clap of thunder every now and then that makes the whole town talk like the world was ending (“OMG! DID YOU HEAR THE THUNDER LAST NIGHT?!?!), and maybe it’ll get a bit windy now and then.

I can deal with heat and humidity, because heat and humidity = sun, beaches, starry skies at night and vitamin D. Overcast skies and drizzle = depression.

Sounds like England :D

I ’ ve never been to the PNW (the furthest north I ’ ve been is SF, which is also pretty boring weather, but at least it ’ s unpredictable). I love overcast, but not when it ’ s wet all the time. Everyone I know in the PNW loves to talk about those three days in July where it ’ s sunny and dry :D

But I don’t miss FL, either (born and raised). Alabama isn’t that far off, but the summer is a little shorter and we actually have 4 seasons, deciduous trees, etc. It’s a good compromise, IMO.

Well, to be fair, the Florida I miss is the panhandle (Navarre, FWB, Pensacola) so it pretty much is Alabama.

I just moved to Portland from FL!

Pro tip: make a run out to Sauvie Island to enjoy the sunshine and sand when it pokes out this weekend. I did it two weekends ago and it was GLORIOUS.

Now you’re speaking my language. I love the uncrowdedness there — we go to South Walton or Perdido Key every summer. Pensacola is fun, too — Fort Barrancas, the old sections downtown, cool city. Completely different than SWFL or East Coast. Harder for the Northeastern people to get there :D

Indeed! I moved there when I was 22... I lived in Niceville, Mary Esther and Navarre. I met my wife in Navarre, got married in Bagdad... I did a lot of living there. I hated it when I first moved there, but it became my home. Then my wife’s family all migrated to Oregon. As we raise our kids it’s going to be great to have grandparents, aunts/uncles and cousins all within 15 minutes, but I’ve told the wife that the second the last kid graduates high school I’ll be making a sprint for the boarder.

The Florida peninsula? Nah... I’ll pass. The Keys are cool, I guess.

If the sun ever pokes out I’ve got an RV roof to repair, a gravel driveway to build and a car trailer deck to stain... So basically, when the sun finally does come out I have to get my butt to work- no lollygagging and enjoying that nice weather!

Hey, at least Panama City has that nice new International Airport for easier/cheaper flights (better activity than Pensacola, Mobile, and Tallahassee). I can totally attest to the ease of having the family nearby when your kids are young. We’re thankful to be just about 4 hours from the Gulf Coast, 4 hours from the Smokies, so both are manageable in a long weekend trip.

Valparaiso has a pretty nice little airport I’ve flown into and out of several times, too.

I suppose the other issue I have with the PNW is that I just don’t know it very well. I go to school full time, work full time and devote every other spare minute I have to the family. I haven’t done much exploring. The southeast? My mom was originally from Alabama, and we had family friends we would visit down there every summer. So, when I moved there, it was already familiar to me. I visited Oregon twice prior to moving here.

I don’t get why people that hate the weather here live here. Including people that have lived here for their whole lives or even generations. If you hate the weather, there’s no reason I can see that you’d stay.

That said, I moved here for this. I’ve been very happy that the weather has remained so fabulous for so long. I’ve been hating these summers with long hot/dry spells.

Overcast skies, drizzle, and 50 degrees. Every day of the year.

Paradise.

I stay for the high cost of living, over-taxation, corrupt politicians, homeless epidemic, crumbling infrastructure and crowded roads. Duh.

If I could convince my wife to live elsewhere, I would. Also, I like my job here.

I wish I didn’t have to deal with those things, but the good weather is probably worth it to me. I’d much rather live on the west side of the cascades with even more rain, but there is no work there.

When your ancestors came from a place with similar weather patterns, you’re born genetically optimized for it. I don’t do well in high heat or direct sunlight.

My ancestors are German and Irish, My dad’s side of the family settled in Wisconsin and Minnesota, and I lived the first 22 years of my life in Minnesota... Don’t get me wrong, I loved growing up there and I wouldn’t trade my childhood on the frozen tundra for anything, but I’m done with all that cold weather shizz.
