Kinja'd!!!

Well, it’s come to this: I’m doing the list of rules used car buyers need to follow to not get ripped off. At least once a day I hear from someone who got ripped off by not following one of these.

I’ve done podcasts on many of these topics as standalones but in the interest of efficiency, here they all are - in one place. Including the obvious - Have the car inspected by a mechanic - to Never shop alone.

And this is from 25 years’ worth of talking to disgruntled car buyers. Gruntled car buyers do not call me, as you might guess. I suspect those are the folks who follow these rules. Here is the audio:

Steve Lehto has been practicing law for 25 years, almost exclusively in consumer protection and Michigan lemon law. He wrote The Lemon Law Bible and Preston Tucker and His Battle to Build the Car of Tomorrow.

This website may supply general information about the law but it is for informational purposes only. This does not create an attorney-client relationship and is not meant to constitute legal advice, so the good news is we’re not billing you by the hour for reading this. The bad news is that you shouldn’t act upon any of the information without consulting a qualified professional attorney who will, probably, bill you by the hour.

That’s more of a Law than a Rule.

Today I learned Steve and I have something in common.

I also don’t like the 71-73 Mach 1

Nobody does. It’s America’s dirty little secret.

Rule #1. Never buy a one-off 48 year old experimental steam car. Especially when it’s really a disguised still.

Just got in an argument yesterday with someone who said it was the most beautiful Mustang ever made. Of course, he was wrong. Very wrong.

I concur. And it was even uglier in silver.

You know what they say about opinions... I have to wonder now if this person thinks the Mustang II was also attractive.

as much as I dislike the ‘71-’73 Mustang, I like the ‘71-’73 Cougars. I think the Cougar’s lines just carried the additional bulk a bit better.

I remember when we chatted last year at your book signing at Auto Zone Hobbies, and I mentioned how I bought a 2011 Ranger originally sold in Canada and re-imported. you clearly were expecting me to tell you some horror stories, but like I said back then it was one of those cases where- since I can look up warranty and repair histories for any Ford/Lincoln- everything was kosher, and it’s been mostly fine.

However, I think I’ve found one area where this (the Canada thing) might be causing me a problem. Transport Canada is only ordering the recall of 2004-2008 model year trucks. I haven’t received a notice yet for mine- I’m wondering if its status as originally sold in Canada means NHTSA doesn’t know about it, so if Transport Canada doesn’t issue a recall I’m SOL...

Timely post for me, Steve, since I’m in the process of buying my first ever used car. I had one Jag XK that looked really promising and made an appointment with the Ford dealer to see it. Go there, and it wouldn’t start. The manager says they’ll take it to the Jaguar dealer mechanic and have that fixed and bring it out to me to try at home.

Get home and tell my 11 year old daughter. First thing she says is, “I wouldn’t buy that car, no way. Who knows what else is wrong with it?”

Out of the mouths of babes.

So yeah, inspection of any candidate by a mechanic is high on my list.

Also, your audience is broader than you might think . Cheers.

That could be an issue, yes.

I was at Pasteiner’s today. Just dropped in to say Hi.
