Kinja'd!!!

I had a Japanese maple of an unknown variety at the house I grew up at. Used to love sitting under that tree. I wanted another one.

I went to a local nursery, and by looking at various types, I figured the one we had was probably of the bloodgood variety. But I fell in love with the cutleaf waterfall after seeing one they had there.

Picked out the weirdest shaped one I could find and threw it in the truck.

Kinja'd!!!

Just fits!

How much did you have to spend on that bad boy? I know they aren’t cheap. My parents have had one in their front yard since I can remember. My wife’s parents were going to get rid of the one in their front yard. Luckily their landscaper was like “by get rid of, you mean sell right? ” They got almost 4 grand for it!

I used to LOVE these trees as a kid. I had an obsession with them. I haven’t thought much about them since then though.

We had a dissectum group subspecies (the one you have I think) growing up. I used to really like that subspecies. Now that I’m looking at them again though, I’d probably prefer the amoenum subspecies:

Either way, congrats on the tree! It’ll look great after it’s had time to grow out and expand.

If you plant a Japanese Maple in the US, is it Japanese Maple syrup or just Maple syrup. Does Japanese Maple syrup taste different?

We have like 3 of these in our yard, all 4' - 10'. If I ever plan to sell, I’ve heard they’re HUGE in the hip hop community.

It was $90. Most places around here are selling them from $130-$200.

The place I got it from actually grow these themselves.

My childhood home had one as well. It was well pruned when small it was like 5 trunks growing from one stump. I spent a lot of time climbing and sitting in its lower branches.

Np they almost got mine. It’s still alive but all that stress stunted its growth. So now it’s my bonsai Japanese maple.

I would turn it into a bansai, its the perfect size to start but they do dress up the yard nice. The red sure is somthing to see.

I have one in the yard here, it was grafted on to a green maple. Been growing well, especially after triming it back some last fall. Its about 4ft tall now.

My parents have one of those. They always referred to it as a laceleaf maple. Anyway, it’s about 9' tall now and probably 12' wide. It was encroaching on half the driveway, but was moved two years ago. It still looks healthy.

The orange color these get in the fall is really impressive. It does not last long though.

Damn, dude. I have an enormous one of these in my backyard. I could have took a sizable cutting and sent it to you for less than that. We’re constantly cutting back one side of ours because it’s a little too close to the staircase and keeps growing over it. We cut 3-5 branches that were much taller than yours is (at least 3-5' long, each) and threw them away just last year...

Dilute Dave’s Insanity (filter or puree) in soapy water and and spray on leaves. My wife and I do that for our tulips, works fairly well.

I have wanted one for YEARS. Unfortunately, I live in the desert, where ‘full sun’ plants thrive best in part sun. I do have a covered porch...can these be container grown?

This is the “dwarf” Japanese maple tree my mom planted in front of the kitchen window when this house was built in 2005. She realized shortly thereafter that it was definitely not a dwarf variety and tried to prune it to not block the view from the window. That was a losing battle. Now that she is gone my husband and I have decided to let it do its thing. Its at least 12' tall now.

We have a couple in our yard too. They’re really cool plants. The leaves seem to have an interesting fuzziness to them – almost makes it feel like some big fluffy Chewbacca like animal when fully leafed out. Also have a couple of bigger “regular” looking maple trees out back and a miniature of some sort by the driveway.

We just put in maple flooring in the house…I guess it was meant to be.

Ah thank you. It’s a little over an acre and in the back yard there’s a lake with incredible views. The downside is 10Mbps internet is $90/month (and we are thankful for it!) and it’s a 20-25 minute trek to the nearest town where the fanciest thing there is a Walmart.
