Kinja'd!!!

My grandma barely drives and my grandpa suggested swapping my Civic for her 2011 Mazda 3. The Mazda is worse on gas, but its more reliable (under 100,000kms while my Civic has 200,000kms) and it’s better on insurance for me (5 years newer plus not a Honda)

I really like the idea and would be willing to drop $100-$200 to revert the exhaust on the Civic back to stock and swap. Hopefully it works out because I’d finally like to have a car with all the speakers working again, plus the Mazda has no rust (just two big scratches and one with paint chipped).

I just hate the tiny interior of the Mazda 3. They are both basically the same trims, cloth seats, A/C, Heat, etc. The Mazda 3 just has a trunk spoiler.

I have to change the brakes on my Civic, and I need a new front bumper and remove rust on the Civic. The Mazda just needs brakes.

You are going to need to find some way to adequately thank your g’pa - that is super nice!

Very cool. Which engine is in the 3?

Interestingly enough we were just talking with my grandmother last weekend about her leasing a new car and passing her 2012 Impreza onto my sister to replace her aging 2001 Outback.

Yeah I hope it works out because this benefits both of us. I’m very excited to have a new car

Do it!

How is the 3 much smaller than the Civic? I know the windshield doesn’t feel as sloped and I don’t remember it having the flat rear floor, but otherwise they’re largely the same size, no?

For 2011 that should still be the old Ford/Mazda L-Series engine. SkyActiv came in 2012 and is more efficient, but those L-Series motors have a reputation for great reliability. Should be a pretty dependable ride.

CIVICS OF THAT GENERATION DO NOT HAVE A FLAT REAR FLOOR.

I find it positively mind-boggling and simultaneously infuriating. There was never an AWD version of the eighth gen, yet my grandma’s 2010 clearly has a rear transmission hump. It’s like they’ve created a problem that doesn’t exist.

Very small, the rear of the Mazda 3 has very little headroom compared to the Civic.

I feel extremely cramped in the Mazda, it def feels like a “compact” but the Civic only feels compact when the car is full.

MY APOLOGIES. I REMEMBER THAT BEING A NEAT FEATURE ON MY BROTHER’S 2001 CIVIC COUPE AND AM SURPRISED THAT THEY DID NOT CONTINUE IT.

I understand a hump if it’s for exhaust and/or electrical or hydraulic lines, but otherwise, why bother? Unless it adds to the crash or body structure?
