Tragic aside, it’s strange.

Very weird place for them too. Not especially close to any NAS.

Hard to see why you’d take one of these when there are still a bunch at the boneyard in better shape (plus two more that are disassembled, but probably still more complete than these).

Edit: Quick look shows 10 at the boneyard, 8 of which are basically intact.

That is if the Navy doesn’t come snatch them and throw them in the shredder.

Maybe they’re potentially leftover props from Top Gun ’s filming? Like, maybe they were spares/written-off frames sent to the studio for close-up shots and instead of being scrapped, the studio just sold them?

The Iranians could still use those for spares.

Spare scrap aluminum? Doesn’t look like there’s anything intact there beyond the frame and some of skin, and its well within Iran’s capabilities to make those parts.

Wow, this is very bizarre. I’m genuinely interested in what the Navy has to say about these.

But this is the kind of stuff that I find absolutely fascinating. I often imagine how awesome it would be to just stumble across some abandoned military equipment. But to find actual fighter jets in the middle of nowhere to me would be like finding the holy grail.

As someone who enjoys hiking, photography, abandoned property, and was in the Marine Corps (more specifically on the air wing side) this just slots into a extremely small niche that would be a venn diagram of my interests.

Temple! That’s just about 45 minutes from me. It’s probably private land, though, and you’d run a good chance of getting shot if you walked out there unannounced. I suspect the Navy will be along soon. I’m sure they have records on each airframe.

Road trip! Maybe wear a ghillie suit, though.
