Kinja'd!!!

My belief, when it comes to older cars, is that frequency of oil changes is more important than the oil itself. Of course there’s little to no science to back it up. But I figure all the little wear the fancier oils are suppose to protect your car from, have already happened in an older car. So I just change my oil at 5k on the dot instead of 7.5k with good oil. Of course frequent oil changes with “good” oil are ideal.

Plus, I don’t know if this is true, but growing up I was taught the quality of the filter is more important than the oil itself. And I always use good filters.

Wix filters are good stuff!

I’ve got a friend with an 01 Camry, seems like it consumes more oil than gasoline. He just bought 15 quarts for $38. Yeah, $2.54/qt!

But are you really saving any money using that oil? It’s got a $25 list price which is most a few dollars less than you’d pay for Mobil 1 or some other full synthetic. Even if you are buying it at $15, the savings doesn’t seem to be worth any particular hit in quality.

I usually go with Wix, but my last oil change, the filter looks horribly bent.

I’m reconsidering whether to go with Wix next time.

I still put mobile 1 in my $500 truck.

I use the same in the Hyundai.

Before finding out Wix was legit, I though they were an O’Reilly’s brand, I used Purolator and Bosch. Both were good, purolator is a little cheaper though.

Can’t remember since I bough the oil about a week ago. I know the savings at Wal-Mart are pretty good if you buy the supertech stuff (bought a quart of it when I was low) But IIRC is was about $7 cheaper, which adds up.

As for the excessive damage. The most standard oils have gotten much better since my car was made. The more expensive stuff might help it last longer, but the most basic stuff certainly isn’t going hurt it.

IIRC base Purolator is garbage, but their PureONE is the real deal. I used both before for my G6, and the gasket seals were really different. It isn’t available in Canada though, bought it from the US when the dollar was par.

Going to see if Mann Hummel carries one for the Ecotec.

It’s another company’s oil in O’Reilly packaging. It’ll be fine. Your car is at a point in it’s life, that it’s a fender bender, deer strike, hail storm away from being totalled. Don’t spend too much extra maintaining it. I used to change mine every 3k miles with a quality synthetic. Then it dawned on me, I’ll most likely move on before it hits 200k miles. Hell, it was almost totalled 2 months ago. If I change it every 5k miles (even with conventional oil) it should get me to 200k no problem. I over maintained a lot of cars, and it was good for the next person maybe? I never reaped the benefits though.

Plus I was looking at the API’s tables. And there’s been 4 new standards for engine oil since my car was made. So the most basic stuff today is probably as good as the “good stuff” when the car was new.
