I just think if you really have an ulterior motive for making people go slower, DESIGN THE ROAD TO BE USED SLOWER. Don’t just turn it into a cash grab.

Google may have seen it as a license plate, which they try to blur. They are way too aggressive about blurring things in public view though, all sort of useful signs get blurred.

This area of 94 through Detroit is STUPID dangerous becuase half the traffic keeps doing 70+ and ignores the 55, half the traffic slows to around 60.

Not actually - speed up to 55.0 mph before you get to the sign. Then, you’re at the maximum, which becomes the minimum.

To be honest the ramps are really damn short downtown Detroit. the highway design hasn’t changed since the 50's. I’m sure thats actually the limit ing factor.

Interesting...I’ve never seen a minimum 55 anywhere, it always seems to be 45 (even on 75mph highways). I don’t know about you, but a 30mph LEGAL closure rate is still pretty scary.

This is actually on 75 (well 375, then 75) and I go the opposite direction of most commuters so its mostly smooth sailing. I do not miss doing 94 daily, man that gets busy.

Yea, don’t studies show that the speed difference is actually what causes accidents? 45 seems too low for sure.
75mph isn’t dangerous, switching lanes because someone is doing 45 into lanes where someone is doing 75, is dangerous.

Just like briefly touching the inside of a corner while transitioning from one trajectory to the next, that sign is your apex point from one speed range to the next.

Bingo — that, plus reducing opportunities to hit static objects, like bridge abutments, telephone poles, trees, deer, etc. If everyone is humming along at 65 - 75, very little can go wrong.
Call it pedantry, but IMO everything we can do to make highways safer is one step towards closing the gap with autonomous cars, and hopefully maintaining some level of control if we’re deemed fit.

My thought exactly, sure he US doesn’t have a ton of yellow license plates, but some state have them, and the probably use the same software globally anyway.

Probably due to a state ordinance of 15mph below. That’s where the common 45mph typically arises - as 15mph below 60, and the 15mph below posted limit is a very common guideline in a lot of states even if not enforced to speeds higher than 45 on roads with a limit over 60. In this case it apparently *is* laid out.

And few people cruise at a consistent speed. It’s usually 75+ on straights but people slow down to 65-70 on the curves, of which there are many. It gets sickening.
Speaking of non-rush hour traffic here. Once the rush hits...

technically, maybe... however, as with every law, there is some leniency.

Way back when I worked in Dearborn and lived on Hall Road in Clinton Township I would have to take 94 from Hall Road all the way around to basically southfield freeway. Brutal. I moved because of it. Haha.
I imagine the drivers on 75 react the same way as the ones on 94 with the 55 speed drop.
Good thing you’re going against the grain, it’s terrible being in it every day.
275 is becoming hell already for this summer.

all true and it drives me nuts. I get it if you have an old truck or SUV, slow it down for the curves - I’ve been there.
But that Focus can take that slow arching curve at 80 - I promise.
