To be fair, the PreRunner wasn’t the standard 2WD. It was a 2WD version of the 4WD, with the added suspension height, etc.
The standard 2WD didn’t even have the 6 lug wheels, it had 5 lugs

yes - I think there is a decent niche market for the PreRunners. Say you don’t need 4x4 but need the extra clearance and beefier tires, (like if you drive on gravel roads a bunch or simply prefer the higher ride position.)
