For the next few days, I'm riding dirty a little bit more than the usual amount I'm riding dirty

Kinja'd!!!

My license plates expire on May 15 each year. In Wisconsin, you put a month and year sticker on your rear plate and you get a new year sticker when you renew your plates. I renewed my registration online but my 2018 sticker hasn’t come in the mail yet. This gives cops more* probable cause to pull me over!

The new sticker every year thing often trips up people who don’t realize you’re supposed to keep putting the year sticker in the same place, on top of last year’s sticker.

Kinja'd!!!

I’ve witnessed this phenomenon on all sorts of vehicles but I was lucky enough to catch a picture of it on a particularly Jesus-y robin’s egg blue Dodge Caliber.

You also have people who don’t know how to take their tag frames off and stick the stickers on top of the tag frame but I don’t have a handy picture of that.

* My lack of front plate gives cops probable cause to pull me over all day every day. Just in case, I printed out the confirmation from the DMV website that shows my registration is current.

What? People don’t put a new stick over the old there?

That’s what you’re supposed to do but there are some folks who either don’t understand that or really want the stickers to spread all over their plates.

I’m going to start doing this on purpose. It’s like those travel stickers on suitcases in the old movies. Too bad I didn’t think of this years ago.

I hate seeing old stickers plastered all over the plate like that. Are they hoping to fool cops and skip renewal next time that color comes back up in the rotation?

The stickers all over is a big thing in Florida too.

We have a yearly yellow registration sticker that goes in the top right corner of the plate. People start decorating their plates and put them all around the edge. Looks terrible and drives cops mad.

When I was in MI, I got pulled over for not having my new sticker. I was on my way to work the day after my registration ran out and planned to go renew at lunch. So, of course a cop with nothing better to do nabbed me. I couldn’t find my proof of insurance in the glove box. So, instead of a ticket for not having a registered vehicle, he gave me one for not having insurance. I went home, printed out a copy of my insurance and sent it in to the DMV with the explanation that I was clearly insured. They cancelled the fine.

It never even occurred to me to put the new sticker anywhere else than over the old.

Your fine, ran 6 months on 2 cars that didnt have updated tags because I honestly forgot, while in a state know for jerks as Staties.

(Ohio and found out they were expired when my app complex put tow away notes on them thinking they were left behind. They were moved every other day).

I’ve never heard the term “staties” before so I assumed it meant you were Canadian, but then I saw Ohio.

I’m not actually worried. I’ve been sans front plate for 4 years. Even got a speeding ticket once and the cop didn’t say anything about the front plate.

I can’t stand it when the sticker isn’t perfectly over the old sticker

I don’t know about OH, but in MA, the email you get confirming your renewal explicitly states that the email itself is written proof of registration until the physical renewal comes through. You could certainly get stopped for being “expired,” but then you can prove that it’s valid, and they’ll verify it when they run your plate.

The rear one, at least. With any luck they won’t notice or care about the lack of a front one. (I ran my first Miata for years without the required front plate, zip-tying it on for state inspection and removing it again soon afterward.)

My license has been “expired” for like a week now. I was lazy and didn’t renew it, so I still haven’t gotten a current card (they send them snail mail) just carrying the old one and a print out of the renewal confirmation. I’m sure the officer could just look it up, but I’m also sure the officer would give me a hard time about it.

I once was a year late on my NY inspection because I didn’t realize that while the registration lasts for two years, the inspection is only good for one.

Hah, that’s what I call the state police in Indiana too. Must be a Midwest thing?

Thats what they have always been called here. Unless its a news story its Ohio State Highway Patrol or State Patrol but anything else its always been Staties.

And yeah im not sure they even care about front plates anymore. My Camaro and dads Si have run without one for along time too and when ever questioned we just say the holder broke off, ordered a new one from the dealer.

Yes I know what state police are. I’ve never heard them referred to as staties.

Urbandictionary says the term “staties” is from New England but apparently it’s also migrated to Ohio.

I grew up in Maryland, live in Wisconsin, and have never heard “staties.”
