Long story... here it is broken down.

Always comes on in the winter because the sensors don’t like cold or something. Went off in the middle of last summer, saying tire pressure was low. I checked everything, all OK. Tried to do a TPMS relearn, one sensor appeared dead. I couldn’t be bothered to go get it fixed because I put up it it through the winter anyway... doesn’t really bother me so I waited until I got the tires changed in the fall. At that point the dealer says that I had 2 dead sensors, but they didn’t have the parts in stock. I said I’d leave the light on over the winter since it comes on anyway. This spring I called ahead and let them know to have the sensors on hand, and instead of replacing them they scanned the computer (WTF??? Why didn’t they do that the first time???) and found there was a stored code that was preventing the TPMS from relearning the sensors. So no new sensors, even though I think they should’ve been done anyway, because they’re more sensitive to cold than ever. It was about 12C here this morning, too cold for them apparently. After all they’re 7 years old now...

I would have pulled the bulb. I have one of them there Manuel TPMS sensors.

I hate hate hate TPMS sensors. Worst thing our government ever done did. Well, maybe not that THEY did so much as the way the OEMs decided to deal with the regs.

Not sure who else does it, but Mazda got it right in 2013. No more sensors in the wheels. They use the ABS wheel speed sensors to detect differences in tire speed that a low tire would cause. Works so well in my wife’s CX-5 the light has only come on once in two years when the temps dropped severely one night.

I’d have done it a long time ago except that the DIC also shows “SERV TPMS” until I clear it every time the light comes on so there’s really no point.

So do I. Useless system, more false alarms than not.

And that Mazda system sounds great.

Considering how many older cars I still see with underinflated tires, I can’t imagine how much time, money, fuel, lives etc have been saved because of TPMS. I say its up there with seatbelts and airbags as one of their best ideas.

Yes but when things like that are left up to the automakers, we get mouse belts that fail and are crazy expensive to fix/replace, and third world airbags that are killing us because they cheapened the shit out of them for $$$$
