Dat Curve

Oh man that is one great looking curve.

Kinja'd!!!

Obviously its been smoothed but that is pretty much how I like my power curves...linear and meaty.

I mean sure, it could keep a little more torque near the readline, but lets also remember that this is the same engine that recently went 1,000,000 miles and looked great when they tore it apart so its a tradeoff I can handle.

Tundra/Sequoia engines had final assembly in the US of ‘Murrrica. Land Cruiser series engines were made in Japan. (but I’m sure you’re well aware.)

263hp and 323ftlbs?! Snap. I wish the 80 had close to that.

Kinja'd!!!

My curve is also very pretty.

I know. right? and the curve isn’t peaky at all, same 240 lbs-ft at 1500 rpm and it only goes up from there.

Yes, that is a nice curve, but I like the NA life because that way I don’t have to wait for peak boost and peak load to reap the benefits.

You know, with a mere $30,000 Slee can make it happen.

of course, that was a few years ago. I mean it sure is tempting but 30 grand buys a turbo and LOTS of gas...

Man that torque curve really falls off. Power looks nice and linear though.

The depends on how the tech sets the filter on the dyno. Mine was set pretty low (10%), the tech changed it 90% and it showed really smooth. No tiny peaks.

I ran Fins N Things with CDan at Cruise Moab two weekends ago. He’s got a supercharged 80 that he purchased new in 1993. I got to pick his brain about it and asked if he’d do that again. Dan said he’d actually prefer an LS swap but the shop he spoke with quoted him around $30k- most likely brand new crate motor and new everythings. I replied that 200's are dropping in price and $30k could get a decently used early 200 series. He kinda looks at the ground, looks around, then looks me in the eye and says “Yeah, but that’s not an 80, is it?”

Oh I mean its got broad power in the midrange, not all at the top end like some peaky engines.

Yeah, but at 5000 rpm its still 276 lbs-ft which is pretty great given that my 4.5 I6 hits that at 3000 and doesn’t even make it to 5000 rpm.

Also true...much better than most of my garbage. The scale isn’t doing that torque curve any visual favors, and I’m a bit used to looking at race engine pulls all day.

so 80 series. This is the same story with VcExpeditions. “but I can get a 100 series and build it up for the price I can get for my 80"

“yeah, but then you wouldn’t have an 80"

I rode 6 hours to Moab in a 100 series. It made me forget the 80. I rode 10 minutes into Hells Revenge in the 100 and it made me miss the 80 like no other.

Its genuinly shocking how much the 80 transforms on the trail. Driving it on the highway or around town its like “eh, its not bad besides the slow, and the noise and the gas mileage and the wandering...”

Driving it on the trail is like “holy hell, what IS this machine im in?” it transforms.

When I did Kokopelli I experienced that transformation for the first time and I was hooked.

Also, didn’t the GX/LX get forged internals over the Tundra?

debated. Hotly debated. Im of the opinion that the early non VVT-i LX/Tundra got Forged, but nothing else did. Mine is likely not forged. No planes for FI though so Im good.

My boosted car will loaf at 2500 rpm in 6th gear on the highway and still pass people no problem without downshifting.

I mean, it’s modified, and has about 375 whp, and according to datalogs when flooring it in 2nd, only takes about half a second to spool to 10 psi and a second to reach peak 18 psi, but hey. Boost.

You have an uncorrected and unsmoothed graph? Curious to see what these dyno at the wheels.
