This rally is for pre-1980 cars only, but they will allow “continuation models” like RX-7 up to 1985, because it was introduced in 1979.

Is this because Mazda is the sponsor?

!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!

How to treat Celica, introduced in 1971? Or Sunchaser, introduced in 1979?

Should I try to get in?

Yes. Why not? Worst they could say is no, but yours fits the bill and the spirit.

Absolutely!! I think they used the RX-7 example because Mazda is the sponsor, but I’m sure it applies to any other car that meets the criteria.

If my Capri was running properly I’d jump on an event like that. Was introduced without real changes from 79-82 (mine is an 82).

Since the Sunchaser was of a Celica introduced in 79, i’d say it counts.

Yeah I had asked to do a rally just before I bought my GTO and they said I could join because it was a continuation model, but then work conflicts didn’t allow me the time off to go.

The full wording is:

Any Japanese car manufactured before 1980, though continuation model s are eligible (i.e., the Mazda RX-7 was introduced in 1979, so all examples of that generation through its completion in 1985 are permitted).

The words I highlighted sure look like they’re talking about more cars than just the RX-7. They’re probably using the RX-7 as an example since Mazda is the sponsor. I wouldn’t read this as the RX-7 is the only model that’s allowed the continuation model exemption.

Since the A40 Celica came out before 1980 you should be fine.

Surely your lawyering skills should’ve identified this, yes? Maybe it’s time for more caffeine this morning. ;)

Kinda funny that Mazda would sponser a rally like that when they old sold like 4 cars in the US before 1980. And the models they did sell here didn’t sell in huge numbers. It would make more sense for Mazda to sponser an 80s only event.

Also I think it’s kinda lame that they are ruling out cars that aren’t nice and new in appearance.

You should be fine, the 2nd gen Celicas have had to have been introduced in the late 70s and the Sunchaser would meet their other criteria of being an outstanding example. No guarantee of course but I say go for it.

Do it! I once contacted the organizer about going in my ‘89 Suzuki Swift GTi and they said that was fine but preference would be given to older cars if they got too full. (Fine by me) they stressed that the “spirit” of the event is classic minded and they’re not so hung up on model years.
