First off, holy hell that gas is cheap.
Second, yeah it’s becoming more common. Some stations I’ve seen in PA/MD charge as much as $1 between regular and premium. Part of the reason I sold my 93-only car.

Looking at prices around me, it seems to be about a 40 cent difference between Regular and Premium, with the exception of Sunoco, which is 10 cents cheaper than everyone else, but if prices are to be believed, charges 70 cents more, so fuck them hard. Also, that’s apparently the cash price and gas stations that pass credit card interchange fees onto consumers can go fuck themselves so very, very, very hard. I even get pissed at people who go to those gas stations. There is no other business in the world that gets away with passing fucking card fees on to the consumer like that.

I noticed the same thing a year or two ago, they have been creeping up more and more. It used to be just 5-10 cents difference between each grade and then all of a sudden it was 10-20. I’ve even seen it almost $1 between the lowest and highest. I quit buying midgrade or premium because of it.

That’s completely normal on the East coast. For some reason, I noticed that California gas has only 20 to 30 cent differences. I literally thought the price for premium once was the “credit price” and the price for regular was the “cash price”. That’s why premium gas in NJ and CA are only like 10-15 cents different from each other in most places, meanwhile regular gas has a difference of 50-60 cents.
Granted CA has all premium restricted to 91 only, whereas we get 92 or 93 depending on the station. But that really should not make much difference.

Wow your gas is cheap! We are about 40 cents across the board higher here in western NY. I’ve seen that jump too. It really sucks and it was part of the reason why I sold off my BMW. I put mid grade in the Mazda, it has the skyactive and the owners manual recommends up to premium. I’ve found the best tradeoff between cost, performance, and economy is 89 octane. I still get 400 miles per tank.

The worst part is sign advertisement and how different stations will have a deceptively low regular price but charge an obscene amount more for premium. But they dont advertise the premium price until you pull up to the pump. Oh and the price on the sign is for “cash price” and meanwhile even regular is another 10 cents more. This is why I try to avoid shady gas stations (aside from the likely mixing of water in their gas).
Gasbuddy and even google maps now are definitely your friend for this. But I wish the signs were just truthful, then I wouldnt need to bother with the App.

It’s a cash “discount” though. That’s how they get away with it. Idk why that stupid loophole has not been shut down yet. The whole point of that law is to prevent exactly that from happening!

I don’t have an issue with stations that do the cash discount, that card fee is passed on to you whether you see it or not. I do however have an issue with stations that advertise at the cash price with nothing clearly stating that it is the cash price until you get to the pump

I don’t think it’s unusual. That said, I suspect some of it has to do with the fact that most gas station signs only list regular and diesel these days.
FWIW, when I got gas on Sunday, it was $2.19 for regular and $2.79 for premium.

Yeah, I was about to say, a 50 cent jump to premium didn’t seem unreasonable to me. When I filled up with regular yesterday at 2.05 a gallon, mid-grade was 2.49 and premium was 2.79... but I live on the east coast so apparently I’ve been brainwashed into thinking that’s normal.

I’ve been frustrated by the trend for a while also. I keep waiting for someone to look into it, and do a story about why this was happening, but haven’t seen it so far. I don’t understand where the cost change is coming from. I’ve seen it as high as 40c per grade upcharge.

I look at it the same way as not advertising pricing including sales tax. Its just an annoyance for the customer in order to save the company some money. I love the sort of places (like parking garages, for some reason) that make their price exactly so that once tax is added in becomes a nice round number. But anyways, about the cash discount, I just avoid those stations at all costs. I refuse to support their business model, even if it means paying more elsewhere.

Historically there was always a 10 cent differential between grades. So premium was always 20 cents more than regular.
In the last several years, the volatility of gas prices has been excessive for premium. Some stations stopped carrying it entirely. Almost everywhere has stopped putting premium prices on the big signs by the road. My entire state switched from 93 PON to 91 PON; in recent time a very few places have begun carrying 93 PON again. But the prices have been all over the map.
I’ve seen as much as a whole dollar differential at times. It is not uncommon for two stations across the street to have different prices for regular, but the station with cheaper regular will have more expensive premium. Since the road signs don’t have the premium prices, you have to drive up to each station’s pumps to compare prices, and see who is ripping you off that day.
It is bonkers.

I doubt it’s that slow moving you know? Gas makers advertise the strengths of their premium fuels all the time. But now, most fuel station signed only show Regular pricing. Heck, some (in bigger numbers sometimes) show an even cheaper price for CASH only

I filled up at Costco yesterday. I just checked GasBuddy to remember the prices. It was $2.48 vs. $2.17 for regular.
PDQ, which is a regional chain here in WI, IA, etc. usually is within a cent or two of Costco for regular, and they’re the cheapest non-Costco place for premium. But they’re at $2.79 for premium right now.
With the 15 gallons I put in yesterday, that’s $4.65 saved vs. if I went to PDQ.
Some other places charge the same as PDQ for premium but there’s plenty others who are at $2.89 or $2.99 right now.
So that’s why I buy gas at Costco.

Primarily because of the altitude, “regular” grade in Colorado is 85 octane. 87 is mid and 91 is usually premium. I think I paid $2.20ish for 85 last fillup. I don’t recall the differences between reg and premium because the Four and a Half can practically run on 50% urine and be happy. Though it definitely appreciates ethanol-free petrol.

That what I figured, I know when they went to VVt-i they bumped compression up to 10:1 but I can’t imagine they still need premium to prevent damage. Sure I will get less performance but the engine will be fine.

It does beg the question: Why? I mean before Cornnation kicked in it was simply a function of rarity as you get less product the more its cracked but it was always a fixed rate increase because the quantities were in a fixed ratio...more or less (you can always set up your refinery for different products as needed or demanded). Now I feel like its “because we can” though maybe again the need for premium fuel is down and so its rarity is up and thus the cost goes up? Who knows.

FYI, I once made a rad wind chime out of the rear suspension lateral bars from the GX470s. It was a recall and they didn’t need them back. I kept a whole bunch, rad some strong fishing line through a hole and cut them in various lengths. Used a 4gr fse cam gear as the center bit.

in my 4 years (06-10), at least in my team of 4 techs, we didn’t do any rear air springs on GX470. One tech bought a GX from a customer with 300K, still on original rear bags. Currently still drives the truck. A few service work on LX470 lines but not too often
