I'm really starting to see the appeal of trucks, even if you don't "need" one

Modern ones pretty much seat as many people as comfortably as a sedan. The ride comfortably and have torquy engines that don’t need to be revved to 3k on the interstate. When loading stuff into it, the sky and number of ratchet straps/bungee cords you have is the limit. Even 2wd trucks have very good off-road capability, compared to a sedan.

Really the only downsides to a truck over a sedan are handling and fuel economy, but I’m sure there’s plenty of sedans were that comparison is practically equal. Like a Dodge Charger or something.

Plus they have 90% of the features of a luxury car from ten years ago.

Then when you consider how popular crossovers are for normies (I’m using that term 64.2% ironically) It’s almost a no brainer, getting a truck over a CUV.

Apart from the gas thing. But I’d imagine the difference between a CUV and a V6 truck is probably pretty small.

There is a third downside to the truck, they’re a bitch to park in tight parking lots. But yeah, they’re great. I love my truck.

Parking in urban areas can be fun, too.

This. A modern Crew Cab truck isn’t “useless because it’ll never get used for REAL truck stuff and can’t take a 4x8 sheet anyway”, it’s a sedan with a huge trunk that can be hosed out, and that can be taken pretty much anywhere.

With that being said I still rather midsize/compact trucks. But I maintain a Crew Cab 4x4 truck is the most practical vehicle possible, especially if you live somewhere that gets real winters.

You’re not convincing me that people should be driving large vehicles for everyday usage, but you do make some good points relative to the norm.

From what I’ve noticed, fuel economy of those small crossovers are very much comparable to mid-sized cars so I understand why a lot of people spring for the slightly larger vehicle at minimal premium - whether for the “just in case” or “I feel safer in a bigger vehicle” or “I prefer to sit higher up”. But I think those are a joke because they’re dressed up (see: slightly lifted + slightly larger wheeled) hatchbacks or wagons and people are eating them all up while proper hatches and wagons are - and were - never given the time of day.

As far as what Average Joe drives to work everyday in, I suppose when good ole compact cars are out of the equation, it really doesn’t matter whether it’s a Ford Edge or a pickup...

Or think of it as an SUV with infinite extra space for common large objects on 3 sides of the trunk. Crew cab trucks may not be able to have 5 passengers and also a closed trunk but with 2 passengers you can have WAY more shit in it than an SUV. I drive what some would consider a large SUV and I call my friends with trucks every time I want to move furniture (And pay them of course) because what kind of SUV can hold a regular sized couch? A dining table? A large backed TV? Two motorcycles? An ATV? a camper?

Yes you can just get more creative. Most I could find was this

“If you hold the button down for at least 5 seconds it will disable RSC/ESC/TCS up to 35mph. After 35 mph RSC and ESC will re-engage, but traction control does not re-engage fully. It will be significantly less invasive”

but im sure a clever workaround will come soon

Most trucks are gorgeous compared to the endless CUVs I see daily. I would much rather see a nice luxotruck towing a big ass boat than a shitty CUV with just one driver no passengers rolling around looking all identical. Trucks are the shit, and people only recently have started hating them in the circlejerk online community.

Tell me about it. This thing needs both shoulders of a four-lane highway to do a u-turn. Without the trailer. Going around tight corners, you pretty well place the front of the truck a full vehicle width over so you can get the back end around an obstacle. From the driver’s seat, you can’t see the ground in front of it for almost 15 feet. Madness.

For me 2wd works just fine, 4x4 is just a luxury. Admittedly it’s a luxury I want to get next, but in 16 Chicago winters driving 2wd trucks, I’veonly needed to be pulled out once ... and that was like 14 years ago.

Sorry, I didn’t mean to shit on your point, because I 100% agree with you on their usability. My truck is like a really good multi tool of vehicles. It’s not the best at most tasks, but it can do a way wider variety of things than just about any vehicle.

I remember a Car&Driver column from many years ago (the aerodynamic F150 era) that proposed building a fullsize sedan by using a truck chassis with rear coil springs and lowered ride height, using another set of front doors as rear suicide doors, and a trunklid over a short bed.

Too bad nobody wants simple sedans anymore.

That’s true, I’m amazed how far you’ll get in 2wd... but 4x4 is really nice insurance. And don’t worry about shitting on my point. Ground clearance=more important than four driven wheels. But like I said, they’re a nice bonus.

You’re not helping! I’ve been trying very hard to ignore the desire to upgrade my daily driver to a crew cab truck for all of these reasons. I’ve pretty much always owned a truck either as a daily driver or as a “third car” and granted I do still have a beater S10 for random hauling needs. I really miss the ability to just bring something home with me, or stop by on the way to grab something, as opposed to having to go home first and then come back with the truck.

And feel free to mock me all you want, but my dream truck is one of the new Honda Ridgelines. It’ll fit all my kids and has all the versatility that I could ever ask for. Plus Honda reliability, and it rides better than any body on frame truck could even dream of, which makes it easy to live with as a DD.

I think that ground clearance, or at least the pickup’s entry/egress, is going to become a pain point — literally — just as it has become for sedans.

One reason crossovers (and minivans before them) are well-liked is the standing hip-point, i.e. you neither squat down nor step up to get in. Older more arthritic buyers find this particularly important.

Eventually the machismo of climbing into your badass truck is going to be seen as a negative for a significant chunk of buyers, even with a fancy articulating step and handholds. Will they just defect to crossovers, and will manufacturers be fine with that? Or will we see ergonomic innovation in pickups? Maybe even an F100/1000 tweener class?

I will say I agree with your points. However, the physical size is a detriment to me. Aside from simple difficulty parking them in tight lots, most won’t fit into normal sized garages. Not as much of an issue in the south or west, but up north, I would greatly prefer to have my truck in a garage once the snow comes.

The Colorado’s selling pretty well; Tacoma always has; and we might see a Ford Ranger before we see Star Trek: Discovery.

But part of the appeal of the full-size pickup is its roomy cabin. People shouldn’t have to tuck in their elbows to get a good hip point.

Adjustable ride height is one solution, but I don’t think a mainstream one. Keep in mind as CAFE keeps ramping (as it must if we’re to keep our grandchildren’s ankles dry) we’re going to have to pay for the ever-increasing excess capability of “half-ton” pickups.

Kinja'd!!! "Smallbear wants a modern Syclone, local Maple Leafs spammer" (smallbear94)
05/16/2017 at 12:04, STARS: 0

As far as the roomy cabin goes, there are tricks the manufacturer can play. I find my truck feels more roomy than the second-gen Colorado, even though the interior dimensions are to all intents and purposes identical. Part of that is in the seats. The old ones are terribly unsupportive, granted... but they make it feel like you’ve got room to move about as a result. The new ones are great if you’ve got an ass the width of a toothpick. They make me feel wedged in. Another thing to take into account is how wide that console is in a full-size. you’re losing virtually no seat space up front in my truck, it’s all in the console. The back seat is another story, but fwiw the middle seat always suck anyway.

I don’t ‘need’ one. I bought one a few weeks ago anyway. Fuel economy wise, trucks have come a long way. I went to ikea last night, and on the way home (130 miles) averaged 21mpg while going 80mph with almost 1000lbs in the bed. All in a full size 4wd v8 truck. And it’s just so comfortable, I can see all of the road ahead of me, and it’s more luxurious than I could ever need, even being an almost base model. It’s big, sure, but really not that bad. With the squared off shape, you can always see every corner of the truck at all times.

But when you’re backing it down a winding foot path through an old-growth forest to a walk-in tent site so you can dump a ton of gravel into a new tent pad... well let’s just say it becomes glaringly obvious my long wheelbase MJ would almost fit inside the Dodge’s wheelbase.
