Kinja'd!!!

They don’t come around that often. I replaced the clutch lever boot with no issues. Boo is grateful, but he wants his carb tuned.

Savor those moments!

Thank you kindly. It’s in pretty good shape, all considered. I’ve been driving this truck since I was 16, so it’s pretty natural.

After the shifter rebuild, it’s still a little notchy. Not really sure how to solve that, but I know the replacement collar/flange parts were not of the best quality.

they are all a bit notchy. so long as you can keep the guts some what greased, it helps to keep them from binding up. also check the rod ends at the column that they havent tried to wear themselves in two. i have always ended up with enough slop there, that they would try and bind themselves up between gears. usually so long as the rod ends are in good shape, keeping them greased lengthens their life by a lot....

Rod ends? You mean the little tab that actuates the shifter arms in the column? I greased everything before putting it back in. I don’t remember it being this notchy ten years ago, though.

no, i meant the ones on the firewall side. but so long as you greased everything up on the inside while you had it apart, it should be fine. being notchy usually just means that it hasnt gotten worn IN yet......

Kinja'd!!!

Firewall side... I no understand. But it will be coming out at some point to replace the rubber firewall seal (3513) and HOPEFULLY I can get some better collar/flange (3511/7228) parts in.

I hope you’re right about the wearing in. I guess the new nylon spacers (7D363, 7336) could need a little wear?

Honestly I’m still kinda proud that I could rebuild the thing myself and it still works.

heh, explodo view.

it can get scary when you are taking something apart, and the more parts that you take off, the more parts keep falling out, and showing up.

when i was talking about the rod ends, it was the 7303 and 7302, where the shifter arm goes through and pins. i have had some worn out old stuff in my day. bushings on them are luxury......

one of the greatest takeaways from having a part like the column took apart like a $2 watch, is that you get an understanding of HOW it works. and when something isnt right you know where to start looking......

Oh, yeah. I put new bushings in there. Had to buy a ball-peen hammer and everything. The old bushings were actually fine, but I figured as long as I had it all apart it made sense to replace them for a couple bucks.

EXACTLY. Sometimes it’s hard to explain to people why I go through so much anguish to do my own maintenance. At the end of the day, it makes me more self-sufficient. If I hadn’t done the shifter rebuild, I wouldn’t have known how to replace the clutch lever boot.
