In general the President of the US can do pretty much whatever the fuck he wants and it’s ‘legal’. Since the President is head of the executive branch, and the executive branch is in charge of executing and enforcing the laws of the US, the President obviously isn’t going to enforce laws against himself.
It would have to come from Congress or the Courts for any repercussions, but it’s a whole lot of grey area. Here’s an old article about Clinton:

If Trump was sharing information about IS that was relevant to the Russians, it likely means it was about IS in Syria and the intelligence came from either the Turks or anti-Assad groups. I’d like to think that Trump didn’t share intelligence information from people the Russians are bombing, but I’m not sure selling out a NATO ally (even if it’s currently run by a Putin-level shitbag) is a comforting alternative.

Also, why is it a bad thing for the President to meet with the Russians?
Optics are one thing but if we’re trying to prevent war (or simply conflict) with each other, you have to keep talking and communicating.
Its almost as if some people want us to completely shut down any talk with Russia at this point. Like we’re some sort of innocent country who has never tampered or meddled in anyone else’s elections before and must treat this as some sort of “act of war”.
Russia will continue to elevate their levels of aggressiveness unless we are proactive and keep up communication. They’ve got to know we’re not to be tested and we must work out our conflicts.

I think you have politicians who have recognized that our country has had some major faults over its 241 year history. I think you’ll notice that one side is willing to point out mistakes we have made to try and learn from them, and the other side calls that side unpatriotic.
That being said, just because we’ve made mistakes in the past doesn’t mean that we should accept Russia meddling in our election. It’s not shocking that they tried, it’s shocking that they succeeded and a large percentage of our population somehow thinks this is okay.
