Awkward Roofline of the Day

Kinja'd!!!

I miss my Ti, awkward roofline and all. I miss the melted-crayon smell of the interior. I miss the burble from the Remus cat-back exhaust on tick over. I miss the floor-hinged throttle. But mostly, I miss the way it goes around a corner. Nothing like dailying a 2nd-gen 4Runner to build appreciation for a well sorted vehicle.

Graduation in a week means I’m just a drive cross country in the 4Runner away from reuniting my garage as it should be, fun daily and capable/practical adventure vehicle.

Bonus: a shot from her best angle

Nice! 318 or something else? I know they had some different flavors in Europe

Just a bare bones 1998 316i. Still have the original price list and catalogue. Inherited it but we didn’t have storage for it and so we sold it.

I have a 316 and love it. It’s a terrible example and I bodged a silly exhaust on it but it’s still fun. I’m hoping to find a really clean 318ti with the sport pack to replace it since the terminal rust prevents this one from being worth savinng.

I’ve always loved the Ti. I’d still consider picking one up as a project car. Not for a while though - I’ve made big commitments to my current project.

That sucks on the rust :/ Mine isn’t a sport but it’s super clean. I got lucky and picked mine up with some nice Dinan bolt ons and a Remus exhaust already on that I really appreciate but would not have been able to justify the price for if I had to buy them on their own.

They aren’t very expensive in not-project form!

We never had the 316 in the states. Mine was about as bare bones as it got which probably translated to a mid-range 318 over there

I know! And I love hatchbacks, unlike most Americans at the time they were sold here, which is why they were so unloved.

I bought mine knowing it was a bit of a dog, since I just wanted something I could do whatever with and not feel guilty about ruining. I’ve enjoyed it enough to find a nicer one to treat well though.

I’d probably at least want a tasteful exhaust adding if I get another. Hopefully I find one like you did with a few bolt ons already fitted.

The styling definitely didn’t help it, I like them enough to have one and even I think it has some extremely awkward angles.

But RWD hatch! I don’t get why it doesn’t happen more often, not just in the states.

The 316 only had about 102 hp but wasn’t really the slowest thing ever on the streets. You’re right, the 318ti was the mid range engine offered here, slotting between the 316i and the 323ti.

Mine only had a cassette radio and the Montrealblau metallic paint as options. Nothing else, not even a rear windshield wiper or a/c haha.

I adore mine, and if I’m ever in need of a miracle run during an autocross the california roof will be opened.

It’s pretty light so 102 might not be so bad. The ~140 from the 1.8 doesn’t feel slow. Not fast by any means, but it gets the job done.

Mine has a CD changer I never use and the rear wiper’s kind of useless. A/C is pretty nice as I have the black “leather” interior
