I didn't get the job.

Kinja'd!!!

I didn’t really expect to land the job, because I was lacking a significant qualification. But I have mad skills in the areas that they need, MORE BY FAR than the person with the qualification who actually got the job. It would have meant a cut in pay, and a much worse commute, and I’m not sure I’d have taken the job anyhow. But that does nothing to lessen the disappointment of receiving the rejection call.

Worse pay and longer commute? You’re kind of making me feel worse for the sucker who did get the job.

Have you considered that you might not have gotten the job because you are overqualified? That does happen. It can be tough for a company to hire and train someone that might not be interested long term. Some times good and much liked candidates are rejected for that reason.

So, maybe you’re too good for what they need. That’s not such a bad thing now is it?

Thank you for that thoughtful reply. No, I had not considered that. I am a secondary math teacher with significant ed tech skills. IT hates me because I am only a teacher and I know more about their job than they do. But I’m sort of stuck in a math classroom because there really aren’t opportunities for a teacher like me. A teacher’s career path is a dead end unless you want to leave the classroom and become an administrator. That’s union work for you.

Thank you for making me smile and feel better.

We’ve gotten a ton of resumes for a job posting lately and have rejected at least 5/6 of them (so far) for being overqualified. youre too good for them!

And too old, perhaps, at 52. You are kind to say that; thank you.

At least they called. I’ll take a rejection over “radio silence” any day. Recruiters are the worst with that.

It’s ironic we were talking about my job last week and now about yours. I feel fortunate that I can just stick this one out a few years until I can retire. Crazy that I sometimes have told IT where a problem is and you know from prior discussions that I’m not paid to do that job so I won’t make a habit of helping them. My wife made a good career out of teaching but if your hearts not in it then you might keep searching for another path.

Yeah, but we don’t know where that sucker lived or how much he used to make. He could have been draining oil pans at a Jiffy Lube across the street from the school.

My heart is definitely in it, but it’s not like in a “real” job where someone comes along and taps you on the shoulder and asks you to go manage something and be more valuable to the company and get a raise, and so on. Just gonna keep turning snowflakes into taxpayers until it’s time to hang up my spurs, I guess.

Yes. This would have been a different gig. But I can tell you about it when I see you.

So what’s the thought process of rejecting someone as too qualified? That they will up and quit as soon as a better gig comes along and you don’t want to have to redo the search in 3 months?

That’s part of it I’m sure. My company also really prefers to pay folks as little as possible and fresh out of college is cheapest. Despite that, they seem desperate to keep me from leaving. I know our rivals have no trouble hiring extremely qualified employees because they keep stealing ours!

I know that feeling. I gave up trying to get a different (although still teaching) position a couple years ago. I got tired of hearing no.

There’s a very specific problem building up in Industrial Tech that has nothing to do with unions. Some day I shall unleash my Project Lead the Way rant for all to read.

Project Lead The Way: I’ve heard of that.

I’ve got a teacher union rant to unleash. Unions are the cause of much of what is wrong in public education. Maybe most .
