Kinja'd!!!

I did the brakes on the Evo yesterday and one of the replacement rotors had this odd machined groove in it. It cuts into the pillars that separate the friction surfaces. Anyone seen similar?

Is say it’s ground for balancing, but that’s a big grind

it’s intentional. Something about balncing the rotor, kind of like how tires are balanced, with weights being added, but in this case with brakes, material is removed,

Don’t worry, there’s nothing wrong with it. But you should’ve gotten the coated rotors that help stop the rust.

I don’t know about those(and I highly doubt it. But when I used to remanufactur differentials some parts suppliers would cut into drums to balance them. I wouldn’t think it would work like that with discs though since it may weaken them.

Kind of what I suspected, but it seems pretty deep and I’ve never seen it in a rotor.

These are just DD rotors, so I don’t mind if they aren’t the prettiest. Really can’t see the hats under wheel anyway.

Balancing grind. Big one at that. But those things also have a really tall hat so maybe balancing is harder

these things are usually sand cast iron, you’d be surprised how out of balance they are as-cast.

Its fine. We see rotors balancing grinds like that at work all the time.

Brand? Looks like a balance cut, as others have said, but seems unusually large. Not likely to be a problem though.
