Oil question

Kinja'd!!!

Can I combine these? All 0W-20 and dexOS approved (whatever that is). My car holds a little over 4 quarts so there’s always some leftover. I just buy what’s on sale (no oil brand loyalty for me). I combined another mobile 1 with the one pictured.

Probably, though I’d only combine two, not all three.

Yeah, you should be fine.

Is that a smart ass answer or being serious?

That’s what I was thinking. I used to do it all the time when I had the Corolla because it just used normal 10W-30 and it was conventional oil. Didn’t know if synthetic was any different

No issue oil is oil, unless you’re going from conventional to synthetic.

Should be fine. Oils get mixed all the time.

Well you combine a bit of them when you do a change, since you never get it all out. So yeah I think it’s fine. I’m in the same position right now. My car takes 4-4.5 quarts on a change. So I’m alway left with remnants, and I never can remember to get the same oil. But my car also leaks oil so I took 3 left overs poured them all into one jug, and it’s sitting in my trunk right now for top offs.

It’s best to stick with one oil - the additive packages can conflict in ways that the oil manufacturers don’t expect.

Even then, it’s not like blends aren’t a thing. There’s nothing inherently bad about mixing them (aside from blends not being as good as full synthetic).

My car leaks a little oil too and similarly takes 4-4.5 qts so it’s nice to have that extra .5-1 qt as assurance XD

Meanwhile the gf’s Prius takes like 4, or just under, naturally doesn’t leak a lick of oil, so all the leftovers will mean a free oil change for her soon. (“Buy 4 get one free!”)

Completely unscientifically (thinking, what would I do...?), I say mix em - probably not a big deal. Probably not even a little deal.

Nice, I could go the same for my Wife’s Fit now that I think about it.

Serious, only because each oil has its own additive package. While combining 3+ different oils won’t hurt anything, you’ll not be maximizing the benefits of any one oil. If you’re only running 3-5k between changes I wouldn’t sweat a mix of three oils. If you’re doing 15k, that’s a different story.

“dexOS approved”

dexos is GMs oil standard. @10 years ago all the car companies started coming out with tighter quality standards above the API standard to get even better fuel, emissions and lubrication results. all dexos 0w-20 oils will work in all ow-20 cars.

there is a chance that mixing various brands could have the additives react. I would say this is minor because when you change your oil, 1/2 to 1 quart remains in the engine.

I do changes between 5-6k miles.

In my car I’d probably never do this... but then again I am super picky about my car and only ever run a single brand of oil in it anyway...

Now my wife’s truck on the other hand I’d do that all week and twice on Sunday. Hell, half of the time I’m just happy her truck has any oil in it at all. She’s not what one would call “good at maintaining vehicles.” She usually lets me know that her truck needs oil when it’s at least 2 quarts down and the valve train starts tapping, and she needs to be somewhere 20 minutes away in about 10 minutes. I’m not proud of it, but I’ve mixed oil weights and even put dirty oil back in the engine just because it was literally better than nothing... which is what was showing on her dipstick. I mean don’t get me wrong after doing something like that I usually follow up with an oil change as soon as possible. But bottom line mixing 3 different brands of the same weight and type of oil shouldn’t cause any problems.
