I used my mother-in-law to maybe get permission to buy a motorcycle

Kinja'd!!!

A couple years ago when I still was juggling 3 cars in the big 1-car garage in my little townhouse, I floated the idea of a motorcycle to my wife since it would fit in the corner of the garage. She was basically like, “motorcycles are dangerous, I’d worry about you too much!” But I may have just wormed my way around that.

Last night, my wife and I took my mother-in-law out to dinner for Mother’s Day. Yes, the night before Mother’s Day. We happened to drive past a biker bar, and I made some random wisecrack about surly bikers trying to look tough. My mother-in-law asked if I had ever ridden a motorcycle. I joked, “my wife won’t let me.”

My wife of course didn’t like me saying this, and also didn’t remember the conversation about the motorcycle. Or so she claimed. I reminded her of the exact brunch at the exact restaurant we had this conversation, right down to the fact that I was eating corned beef hash at the time.

She still couldn’t remember the conversation, supposedly, but also said she would never want to stop me from having something I truly enjoy. But then she had to go all realistic talking about all the practical things we need to do first.

So... I’m getting a motorcycle! All I have to do is open a successful restaurant, buy a house, and adopt a kid. Then it’s all mine!

I’ve always hated the “don’t do that, I’ll worry about you!” thing. considering the ratio of miles I drive vs. ride, you should worry far more about me getting T-boned in my truck.

I dunno, I definitely get where you’re coming from but personally, that’s one I’ve just kinda agreed to let me wife have. Her uncle was killed on his bike, so while I’ve always wanted to give it a shot, I also don’t really know what I’m missing and she’s pretty supportive of my car habit so I just kinda take that as a compromise. I might get a little scooter or something once we move close enough to my job to avoid highways, a certain Vespa always appeals to me, but I just kinda let this one go for the most part, in the grand scheme of things it’s not that important to me and she truly would just be sitting on the couch freaking out every time I went for a ride anyways.

Let’s say the world ends, Walking Dead style, and the only thing available is a bike. Fantastic gas milage and it’s practical. That’s the argument I’m using. It’s almost mine hahahah.

If you’re hyper vigilant and don’t do stupid things, like weaving through traffic like a dickhole or stunting on the street, they’re perfectly fine. Sure there’s risk, but modern gear goes a long way to mitigating that risk.

Why not sign up for a motorcycle class and see if it’s even something you want to pursue? Good starter bikes can be had for less than you probably spent on your wheels and suspension mods.

I see you’ve posted a photo of a Triumph Speed Triple. That’s the bike that made me care about bikes. It’d be a TERRIBLE first bike. I started on a Triumph Speed 4 (600cc 4 pot instead of 1050cc triple) and that was only marginally less terrible a decision. I managed to survive it but I would have enjoyed it more had I not spent all my time worrying about the bike trying to kill me. If I had it to do over again I’d start on something like a Honda CB300F.

Quick motorcycle question. What’s a good standard/naked bike that’s cheap and good for a beginner? UJM bikes are hard to come that run, but aren’t restored. Apart from those there seems to be slim pickings for non sport or cruiser bikes.

I’d consider a moped, but I’d like to go on highways and in between towns and such on it.

My lady friend supports me getting a motorcycle. Mainly because she knows I’m the end she will put more miles on it than me because I will get annoyed with the clothes and chances of rain.

Before my girlfriend and I started dating, I laid out some very simple ground rules.

1. I will never say you can’t do something, so don’t tell me what I can’t do.

2. Don’t make me choose between you and my cars/motorcycles/guns/computers, because you will lose, guaranteed.

5 years later and we’re still together, because she doesn’t make me choose. She’s awesome.

I posted it because it looks cool, not because I’m going to buy it as a first bike. At most I’d get a Suzuki SV650, if that.

I’ve never had to lay down the law with my wife like that because she’s generally reasonable and respectful/tolerant of my assorted stupid things like messing with my car, buying ridiculous amounts of sneakers, and spending roughly 15-18 hours a week in the gym.

I’m more of a car guy anyway. I’d rather have a convertible as an extra car but the motorcycle gets the wind in the face without needing another garage spot.

It’s not in the cards anytime soon, even a “cheap” used bike is money we’re not going to spend while we’re trying to start up a business. It was more just a fun conversation that took place.

Yeah I have an NC currently so that fulfills most of the urge, like I said, I get my cars, she gets no motorcycles.

Ehhhh. I’ve been riding street bikes for well over a decade now (I’m only thirty) and it’s a very dangerous activity even if you aren’t being stupid. Gear protects you from the ground, but doesn’t do much against two ton vehicles at speed. Motorcycling is dangerous, but that’s part of the fun. Recognizing the danger helps keep you vigilant. I second taking a class.

I’m really glad I got into street bikes when I was eighteen, so now that I’m thirty my wife is conditioned to the danger. She still asks that I text her whenever Infeacb my destination.

Good point. But at least when you do feel ready for it it shouldn’t be too difficult to reward your hard work starting said business.

True. I wasn’t trying to argue that they’re just as safe as cars. My point was just that our wives/mothers/SO’s/families sometimes blow the danger out of proportion. Motorcycles are dangerous, but there are steps you can take to be safer about it. Life is dangerous and fear of its dangers shouldn’t prevent you from doing things you enjoy.

Exactly. Life is great and ultimately lethal.

I’m a Honda guy, so I’m going to recommend the CB300F. It’s sort of sport bike shaped but it’s the naked version and you get a little more upright posture which I prefer to leaning down and keeping all the weight on your wrists. You can get it with ABS too. You could also look at the new Rebel if you prefer something slightly less sport bike shaped.

The cool thing about starter bikes is that you can ride them for a couple years and then sell them for not a ton less than you paid for them. Also, they don’t generally require ridiculous amounts of maintenance. Keep the oil changes on time and keep the chain clean and lubed and you’re golden.
