Kinja'd!!!

Is plan C every really the option to entertain? If you haven’t seen the Spanish Grand Prix I would recommend not reading ahead?

So what do you guys think of plan C? It’s seemed like Ferrari was planning to finish the race on the medium tire, but plan C was to switch back to the soft before the race finished. Overall I thought it was a good strategy for Vettel on the medium tires, to try and chase down Hamilton on the softs and push him to use up the tires in the last few laps. It just never materialized for Vettel and he ran out of time for plan C.

What about the rest of the race? Alonso finally finishing a race, was like watching somebody come back to life. Felt good to see him celebrate in front of the home crowd. Even all the smaller teams were competitive. It’s shaping up to be a great season what do you guys think?

I assumed “Plan C” was to see how Ham’s tires degraded and if his pace really started to fall, they’d pit Vettel and finish on newer tires

I agree. Do you think they should of gone to Plan C? It just seemed like sticking with plan B was more of a good enough kind of strategy. Plan B being having the medium compound last longer than Hamilton’s soft. I think if they had gone to C Vettel would of finished fourth or worse. I guess what I’m getting at is that a Plan C is more than likely not a viable option in F1.

Well considering Ricardo was what, over 30 seconds behind vettel, he still might have finished 2nd.

I dont think Plan C would’ve improved his standings

Even if Seb had gone with a three-stop he was far enough ahead of Ricciardo that he would’ve come back out in second. His gap to Lewis was around 3-4 secs, add another 22 secs or so for a pit stop, and Vettel would’ve needed more than a second per lap (probably closer to two seconds per lap) depending on when he had decided to pit.

Really, Vettel would’ve ended up in the same place. Plan C would never work without the degradation of Hamilton’s tires. It was a reasonable plan given Lewis’ first stint on the softs, but even I was surprised he managed to finish the race on his second soft stint.

Good point. It would of been a close coming out of the pits. All of this close racing makes me wonder how dramatic a finish we will see in Monaco.

Hamilton really did a great job taking the tires to the end. I thought he was done for when he radioed that the rears were overheating. Honestly it was good to see him on the podium, but even more important to me is that Ferrari has a real chance this year.

I also thought he was going to have a tough time when he radioed about the overheating. I think it’ll be a lot of Vettel/Hamilton trading wins so reliability is going to be very important over the course of the season. I’d be upset if one driver suffers more DNFs than the other - we want this championship battle to last the season.

Also, I wonder how much more Bottas can win before the team has to make a clear decision on number one and two drivers. Really unfortunate that he suffered a DNF today.
