Really? Is the new stylistic cues in automotive design to put as many contradicting and random, lines, cuts, shapes and angles as possible? And then adding cheap plastic?

I’m sorry, but this is getting ridiculous.

I don’t know how many people I speak for, but personally, this is revolting.

The new 2018 Toyota CH-R (I think its a go, not just concept).

Kinja'd!!!

Kinja'd!!!

I don’t even like to look at it, but I honestly would not drive that if you PAID me. None of the lines or cuts make any sense. It looks like they just used a computer and put 3 already crappy new car designs together and didn’t even change anything to make it more smooth and thought-out. It’s almost deformed.

I’m sorry if that offends anyone who likes it. I’m just in shock that they are producing a vehicle like this.

I might just be old fashioned, because most of my favorite cars were built between 1960 and 1985, and favorite year of car being 1971.

Thoughts below.

Yes, this is the trend now. Mazda and Volkswagen, and a few others, still manage to be pretty tasteful though.

I like the CH-R. I have two problems with it though.

A. FWD only.

B. Horrible visibility. Especially when you’re sitting in the back seat, the C-pillar blocks out any light and view out of the window.

The weird rear door handles are kind of an issue too, but I like the look of them and quite a few other cars have had them in the past, it’s not just a CH-R thing. First gen Pathfinder anyone?

I’d say that at least you’re getting the new platform with this... but the big thing that the new platform gets you is a Golf-clone independent rear suspension, and the iM has that anyway (due to being Toyota Europe’s direct Golf competitor).

You do get more engine, but I wonder how much of its added power is taken up by the crossoverness - on the highway, it almost certainly is, based on the fuel economy numbers: http://fueleconomy.gov/feg/Find.do?action=sbs&id=38679&id=38112

The only other thing I can think is, with the C-HR’s longer wheelbase, it could hold back seat passengers more comfortably than the iM?

(I mean, I bought the other model on the TNGA-C platform, which has a longer yet wheelbase, and not a crossover ride height...)

Oh, and what’s hilarious is... in Europe and Japan, the C-HR is available in a hybrid, FWD only. (The only way to get AWD on the C-HR is to get the 1.2T with a CVT, a drivetrain not available in the US.) In Japan, the Prius, on the same platform, with exactly the same hybrid system, has optional AWD.

While it doesn’t do it for me overall, I have to admit that it isn’t the worst interpretation of the Toyota’s horrible, terrible front end that afflicts much of thier current lineup.  This one doesn’t seem to make me think wtf every time I see it.

If you want to see a lot of cheap design elements thrown together to be trendy, see the Nissan Juke and actually everything in Nissan’s North American lineup. None of that stuff will age well, except maybe the Rogue--that one is surprisingly conservative.

Big pieces of chrome!
Character lines everywhere!
LEDs in arbitrary shapes and patterns!

This C-HR is a little better but not much. The biggest sin is the awful rearward visibility and the pillbox of a rear seat.

That’s exactly what it is.

And, FWIW, it’s Europe driving the existence of this thing.

Also, the US-spec model was originally supposed to be a Scion, where it would’ve made a lot more sense. (I mean, “a lot more” than zero can still be a rather low about of sense, but it’d be Scion’s only crossover.) But, well, we know what happened to Scion.

It just hurts me to see the stuff Toyota keeps rolling out for the US. The iM (which is just an Auris) is the only interesting thing in a while, but it has only one engine option. Toyota has no interest is the success of models other than the Camry, Tacoma, and hoardes of crossovers.

- Chevrolet Spark

- Suzuki Swift (the latest one has them there, a first for the Swift)

- Alfa Romeo Giulietta

- Lancia Ypsilon

- Nissan Micra (the latest one, just like the Swift)

- Mahindra KUV100 (which has a handle up there, but it’s painted silver, so not exactly hidden.)

- DS 4

- Trumpchi GA3 (which is a SEDAN)

- Renault Clio

Well everything has been done, cars have been styled in so many ways. At some point they might just have to be pure aero efficient and look like Apteras. We are living in a time when I think all this stuff is going to really change. The next twenty years will change things dramatically. Cars have haven’t existed that long and we have gone from horseless carriages to huge sedans to muscle cars....now Teslas are all around here. I have a 1971 Z, I think the late 60's to 1973 is the best period. It is a weird Toyota, I much prefer the Macan for a modern SUV.

Still looks like garbage to me. Lowering it and putting big rims doesn’t change body lines and the shape of lights, windows, pillars. There’s so many things you shouldn’t do with the exterior styling of this car, you can write a book on it.

I actually think it is worse looking than the Juke. It has even more contradicting angles, and the rear C-pillar is a total mess. I mean, in 60 seconds I could point out 10 things wrong with just parts behind the B-pillar alone. That is, if I can look at it long enough without being too revolted.

No excuse to make cars as ugly as they do. There has to be better design ideas out there that haven’t been done. This recipe for disaster (exterior styling disaster, that is) has to stop. I keep looking at vehicles built in 1971, then vehicles built in 2017, and go “How could we get so wrong? How could we change so much? Why has this become normal?”

But that’s sort-of the point. The C-HR wasn’t designed to make sense, to follow the unwritten rules of car design, or to look sensible. It’s the car equivalent of the Duel Runner from Yu-Gi-Oh! 5D’s. Ridiculous, over the top, and distinctly Japanese.

These are a definite go. Local dealer in town (the first Canadian Toyota dealer might I add), has already sold 2 of them, and still has 1 on the lot in red.

Toyota’s aftermarket division TRD has put together some one-off versions of the C-HR crossover and 86 sports car to show off at the Tokyo Auto Salon.

The C-HR is done two ways, Aggressive and Extreme, to show off two different looks for the new small crossover. The Aggressive goes for a track-focused look, packing a custom front bumper, LED daytime running lights, custom rear diffuser, extended side skirts and a lip spoiler on the tailgate. On the Extreme model, TRD went for desert-racing style thanks to new red mud flaps, a big front spoiler, black wheel arch flares and 16-inch alloy wheels . It’s not just all looks either as the Extreme C-HR also packs a motion control beam for the suspension, tire pressure monitoring system and door handle protectors.

The yellow one reminds me of the offspring of a Judge Dredd Taxi (Land Rover Forward Control (aka 101FC)).

I mean, don’t get me wrong. I’m not telling you (or you guys) what you can and can’t like, and if you like it, love it, and it grows on you, well that’s your prerogative and good on you. But this design will never grow on me. All my cars are, and I’m 99.9999% sure will always be, traditionally styled. That is, front lights are square, rear lights are square-ish/rectangular-ish, nice sized grill, nice hood to trunk to cabin proportions, small amount of sharp angles, no lines or curves that are harsh, strange, or contradicting. I will show you the examples below (3 pics):

Here’s my 1972 Electra. Quintessential classic luxury car styling. A rolling piece of art. I get thumbs up and positive remarks every 5 minutes:

Kinja'd!!!

Here’s my 2013 Avenger Blacktop. Not over the top, but the design is reserved. No crazy cuts or angles here. It’s almost a freshened-up older design:

Kinja'd!!!

Here’s the new 2018 CH-R in contrast. Nothing even remotely close to my two cars. Where the heck are all those random lines on it even going?:

Kinja'd!!!

Take a look at the 3 and you can see why I’m flabbergasted.

But thanks for your input and sharing your opinion! I wanted to see the feedback on it, and I was surprised.

If that is your taste, all to it my friend. I don’t see the appeal you do. The design of my cars, and all my cars to come, will be reserved. Not 100 crazy cut lines, angles, and plastic trim pieces on the exterior. And odd shaped lights, windows, and grill.

But thanks for the feedback!

It’s all about functionality and following all these guidelines. Government mandated guidelines. Exterior styling is thrown on the back-burner for efficiency, safety, and like you say, this attempt to look “futuristic” (but it’s failing hard).

But why would people want to buy a car that was designed to be ridiculously ugly? Why do people buy the new Prius for that matter?

I think I am a dying breed. A mid-20s man that dislikes almost every car built after 2013. A person that cares more about simplistic styling, classic taste, driving experience, and exclusivity in their cars than anything. There are few of us left lol.

Even with the death of so many car companies over the years there are still so many cars out there to choose from, each competing for the next customer. Modern people want to be seen to be different and to stand out from everyone else, so the companies cater to it.

I’m on two polar opposites when it comes to car design. I love good, clean design but I also love it when the designers go absolutely crazy and over the top. There is no in-between, like how the new Civic sedan is pretty meh. Either do it well, or really experiment if you want to experiment.
