The main character of the book and the movie lives in Carthage, his wife describes the town in a very unsavory way, very hypocritical, with McMansions in the north and strikes and unemployment in the south. Also very southern.

Isolation within a church belt does nothing for a small town. When the big city library down the road has books with white out covering “Damn” then you know you got much more going on in Carthage.
