It rained all day yesterday, pretty much, so I made sure to drive my car and leave it outside all day so the taillight moisture would come back. It had already dried up.

Kinja'd!!!

I wanted it present for my appointment with the dealer on Wednesday so they won’t try and act like there’s not a problem.

Well, after an all day heavy-ish rain, no moisture came back. Sigh.

Was it just a fluke? I doubt it. I’m still going to my appointment. At least I have photos to prove it.

Can you just remove the lens yourself and try to add a rubber bead or something?

I could, but I don’t want to. I tried to pull the trunk liner down and see about it and I broke two plastic clips and cussed a lot so I gave up.

Take the car though a car wash right before taking it to the dealer ... that’s my suggestion

For what it’s worth I’m a mazda tech and haven’t seen this on any of the newer models.

So glad we have a Mazda tech on Oppo! I’m considering a 2015 3, hatch... seen any come in at 200k miles yet?

Usually its not the rain getting in, its condensation build up from a cool night on a warm lens. You could hope for some similar weather, or tell them if they don’t believe you/your pictures that a random guy on the internet that was a Mazda dealer Parts Manager in WI for 10 years says to go ahead and replace it ;)

I’ve seen a few 6s on the forums with the issue and then my friend in Indiana has a 3 sedan that’s had both of its taillights replaced for the issue. It’s not super common but it has happened.

Mine may have been a fluke. I don’t know. But it was only that lens (passenger reverse light) and it was a LOT of condensation.

Huh, that’s weird. Admittedly Subaru kinda steals the show here in CO but we’re still one of, if not the, biggest mazda dealer here and I’ve been a tech for about a year and a half and have yet to come across this. Although it is very dry at this altitude so maybe that has something to do with it.

I’ve seen 140k but that’s the highest so far. Which doesn’t mean they don’t get there just that they’re relatively new still and I doubt there’s that many 200k+ ones out there yet, and also people are much less likely to pay our (admittedly high but not my decision) labor rates on anything over 100k so we don’t see much over 150k even first gen 3s. Any particular questions ask away though, I owned a 2015 3i touring hatch with the stick for a year or so before trading it on my NC.

Nice trade in and thanks for all the info! I noticed 3 hatches with under 20k miles are relatively cheap and I average 40-50k+ miles a year (currently at 25k miles this year). Was considering snagging one and seeing if I could keep it for 7-10 years as depreciation would kill the value based on milage but for the price isn’t bad at all.

My main concern is will they last + rust (I live in Quebec where they dump an inch + of salt at a time haha)

Yeah we don’t salt much here in Denver so I don’t have a ton of experience, some of the east coast cars we get at auction have had some surface rust on the underside, usually calipers/rotors. I don’t know that it would worse than a lot of other brands but might be worth looking for local owners. Mechanically there’s not much to worry about that I’ve seen, a few common issues that are generally caught under warranty, they seem to either have them or they don’t, usually not something that develops past 20k or so. I will say avoid the Mexico cars, they’ve had a lot of stupid recalls and I wouldn’t take the chance on one personally, at least when you can also get a Japan built one instead.
