Kinja'd!!!

A local man tried to sell his 1984 Corvette to a friend of his father’s on Saturday, only to find out that his car had other plans. After he had fixed a myriad of problems on the car and regularly drove it for a couple of weeks without issue, the car was brought home and driven to the garage. Ten minutes later—as the interested party sat in the driver’s seat and was beckoned to fire up the car—it refused to turn over. After such an embarrassment, attention turned to the cosmetic condition of the car. The opportunity to impress the potential buyer with the impeccable mechanical condition and driving experience was thus squandered and he was scared off by the greatly inferior exterior and the vehicle’s rough edges. A loose starter connection was later found to be the culprit, but it was too late; the car had perfect timing in dislodging the wire and, in doing so, had foiled the plot of its sale. When asked for comment, the owner advocated for the reintroduction of the controversial 2009 “cash for clunkers” federal program.

Had a friend selling a 2000 Camaro SS with a 408 stroker motor making over 500 RWHP. The car was fairly clean and ran well. He found a buyer out of state. 2 hours before the buyer was to arrive with a trailer from about 800 miles away, the fuel rail decided it wanted to spring a leak. On a Sunday. At 6PM. The deal went through without a hitch, but still; could have been an issue. Cars have a way of doing this.

I am! I’d be happy to just recoup my investment, ~$3,900 (which is also the “family and friends” price). I bought this one (manual/Z51, 105k) in November after it sat for over 5 years and towed it to Alexandria and put in a replaced the fuel pump, all filters and fluids, clutch hydraulics, the starter, and lots of smaller items i.e. head unit, lights, etc. With new tires it should be ready to drive through this year without any work on antique tags. The P.O. had replaced ball joints, shocks, steering rack, most gaskets, and more before parking it. However, it’s not all good news: paint is pretty bad, windshield is cracked, rear tires are dry-rotted, and it needs some attention in the interior department.

It’s a car for a particular type of person who is willing to enjoy driving (rather than waxing) it in its current state and gradually improve the car by fixing the small problems as they go along. Overall, I’d say the underlying soundness of this ‘84 makes it a much better purchase than my red ‘85, which looked nice but has fundamental issues that this one does not. The ‘84 is the opposite of a museum piece, but is a ton of fun and feels very fresh.

Anyways, let me know if you want to drive it or know anyone interested! By the way, do you still have your 335i or W204?

Wow, there’s a nail biter. I don’t think the fact of the engine running is a small consideration when selling a car like that.

I’d love to look at it one day! I’ve got the 335i still, W204 is pretty much my sisters now.

Probably gonna be in the market for a pretty well sorted out “project car” at the end of the summer when I have more $$ saved up. Corvettes were always cool to me but I never really thought about owning one. Now I feel like a cheap C4 wouldn’t be a bad idea after some research.

My grandmother was holding an open house after my grandfather passed, and the house picked that perfect time to have the insulation on the wires get rubbed through on a tree, and have every electrical thing I. The house start flashing on and off.

Sorry for the late reply, sounds like a good idea given that you already have a car that’s easier to drive day-to-day! This one would need antique tags at first given the cracked windshield, but it would be fun to have on the side for weekend driving and tinkering when paired with a good daily driver. I can’t guarantee that I will be here or own the car beyond June as I might travel to Cuba for an undefined period of time in July, but I won’t contact any interested parties (of dubious interest) or post it in classifieds until June in case you consider going down the Corvette rabbit hole sooner.

There’s certainly risk involved with a car with as relatively old and complex as an early C4, but my experience with them tells me that the bad and the ugly of this car is skin-deep. I still have a few minor things to do, but this Vette is almost ready to move on to a longer-term owner willing to invest what is needed to bring it up to par cosmetically. I’d love to see the car go to a good home, so just keep me updated!

That is the worst timing in more ways than one. It’s not exactly a time to laugh that stuff off when chance is out to get you!
