What the fuck was wrong with a normal hose clamp? Why install one that falls apart as soon as it’s unscrewed? Not pictured, missing fourth piece.
Alternatively Titled: If it costs $10 extra for the dealer to do it, just get the dealer to do it.

Disclaimer: I am not supporting Hyundai’s usage of these clamps at all, I too think they’re dumb. BUT, I do see why they use them. It’s probably because they can be opened all the way and be put on or taken off of tubes while they’re in place. So that would be my guess. But yeah, they are crap.

Normal hose clamps like these sometimes seem to have trouble re-engaging the gear to put them back together if they’re in a tricky spot or something is kinda twisting them. I mean, I haven’t ever had any real issue with one unless it’s rusted really badly. But maybe that was the reasoning that Hyundai went with. Both styles can be operated with a socket or a wrench so I can’t see it being a tool based decision. I never use a screwdriver on them. I slip it out too often, and can’t see an assembly line using one either. Most of those tools are designed for pretty positive engagement to avoid stripping and slipping.

You’re not supposed to completely loosen them, I think my Supras and IS300 had those. Replaced them all with T bolt clamps whenever possible

Looks like some kind of Chapmanesque “add lightness” thing. Who knows what gets into these crazy bastards? Consider yourself lucky not to own one of those German things, where they redo things that were handled perfectly adequately by conventional means for the last half century a new, hard, expensive way, just because they can.
Does the missing piece go between the head of the screw and the wire?

The “normal” worm-gear sorts of clamps completely fail if slightly over-tightened and can cut the hose you’re clamping even if they don’t.

No. They fail if you over-tighten them even slightly, and they can and will cut the hose you’re clamping.
If you look up the fuel injection hose clamps, they provide much better 360° clamping with much better results.

I don’t have the correct tool either. Generally I use a pair of needle nose vice grips or channel locks, perpendicular to the clamp, but wide-nose vice grips in line with it work pretty well too.
Maybe it’s a thing of practise. I’ve also wrestled them off with just my fingers.

These are the devil. I had one pop out of the pliers on me and it shot directly into my fingernail doing about mach 6 which of course hurt like hell and caused me to shout some very choice words. The resulting blood blister took about 5 months to heal/disappear.

It’s definitely a thing of practice. I’ve always used needle nose pliers but I still occasionally get my finger pinched when they slip. I usually replace them with standard hose clamps even though new replacements of those probably do the job better.

They do make a proper tool with basically two hooks and a cable on a ratcheting mechanism that can grab ahold of the tabs and lock them open.Once you have the right tool these are actually not bad at all. I’ve actually bought more to use on some vacuum lines.

I knew about the tool. I just don’t do enough with hose clamps currently to justify it. If I did I probably would consider it since they seem the most secure.

fair. Once you have it you like these clamps because they’re much easier to deal with especially in tight spaces as opposed to worm gear or really anything with a fastener, because they don’t want to spin (re-clock) while you tighten them.
