Kinja'd!!!

I am thinking about starting the Vespa restoration today with the installation of new parts. I was thinking about the gauge cluster, and realized the odometer will be wrong. Does anyone know the rules for this?

On an unrelated note, Kirby likes to sleep in the Sunchaser and meows at me when it is covered. Sorry for the poor picture quality, but I quickly shot this while he was yelling at me for interrupting his afternoon nap....which follows his morning nap....and precedes his evening nap.

BONUS QUIZ: Can you identify this part?

The rules on odometer ‘fraud’ are highly state dependent.

There is usually a method to roll an odo forward to match an old one. Depends on what that process is and if it requires special tools

Not sure if you saw this, but here’s a PDF ( direct link ) from the CA DMV that may shed some light on the matter.

As far as I can tell, for vehicles 10 years old and newer, it needs to be officially documented. Otherwise, I believe it’s exempt from Odometer reporting.

Check with your state as far as the odometer. They all require you to account for the discrepancy but exactly how it is done may vary.

If you can you should talk to a speedometer shop about setting the new one to read the right mileage. The one I’ve used before had a form they would fill out to submit to the state showing they had changed it and the mileage is correct.

If that’s not possible check with your state, and they probably have a form that you need to fill out showing the mileage on the old cluster and the current mileage shown on the replacement.

If the current odometer is broken I don’t think there’s an alternative to having the title marked “current mileage unknown.”

We have milage stickers for replacing clusters in cars that can’t reprogram mileage. I could sell you one of those. You put the old mileage on the sticker and then add it to the new cluster for proper mileage.
