Kinja'd!!!

My keys are unbranded (no Vauxhall logo) so I’ve kept the Ford strap on there (got it from a Ford dealer) so that if I lose my keys they won’t think to try it in my VX and steal it

My very well worn set. Only got one key for the car, so got to keep it safe!

That may not be a wonderful idea.

First of all, it seems it is possible to cut a working duplicate of a key out of a picture; but more importantly sometimes people upload images which have a GPS stamp on it, which makes it very easy to pinpoint the exact location where the picture was taken.

This subject had quite an interesting (and terrifying) thread on PistonHeads years ago.

If you saw my car you’d probably leave it where it is

I can’t see why people in this group would care if others knew where we lived. We often post pictures of our cars with embedded GPS, pictures of our license plates, and other such things.

The key thing might have slightly more merit.

The problem is that anyone (not just “us” or, as you put it, “this group”) can find a picture posted in Oppositelock (or Jalopnik, or whatever) through, say, Google Images. If that picture has GPS data and this person has bad intentions... well.

I think people should be aware of the details they are giving away with their pictures. You may not care –fair enough. Others may have a different point of view.

Of course it is the combination of GPS position + ability to duplicate the keys what is really dangerous.

Yes, same with me. Others may not be in the same situation though!

I keep my truck keys separate from house/school keys, to keep from wearing out my ignition cylinder.

I’m a locksmith and have cut keys after looking at them through the windows. I’ve done it for them laying on the seat. on console or hanging from column. So the answer is “YES” you can make them from a picture. Once you figure out the reference point for where the cuts start or end and where the metal on the blank starts when uncut its simple to figure out. I may be a GM guy but I’ve also done keys and coded/recoded cylinders for VW, Jeep, Mazda, Isuzu, Ford, Honda, Audi, Chrysler, and Toyota. If I had you standing in front of me at work I could teach most people the basics of locks in about 15 minutes.

I am impressed. And I also find it rather troubling!

Many thanks indeed for the explanation.

My favorite time to show off to coworkers was in the 80s when one of the salesmen sat about 6-8 sets of keys on the seat of a Corvette in our showroom and locked the door. I could see about half of the door keys from looking through windshield and both doors. It was back in the day when there were separate ignition and door keys, they had the paper stock tags which partially blocked my view. We didn’t have the key code for the Vette that they were in because it was a used car. Key codes weren’t easy to come by before computers in dealerships. I wrote down cut #s for what I thought each of those key weres and one of those was its key but we couldn’t read its tag. After going through about 6 blanks with a hand cutter I finally got a key that worked despite being off on one cut. Took some wiggling but it got us in.
