I know I should post lots of pictures and accurate description, but I know people spell out phone numbers to cut down on scanners and should I only accept cash? Do I go with on a test drive? Sorry, it’s all new to me!

Someone here gonna scoop that up. If I didn’t graduate tomorrow and get married next Saturday I would be. I want one of those small little trucks with a manual

Make sure to cover the licence plate with your thumb.

Darn. That’s a little too far away for me to consider. Take nice, non blurry photos. Be careful where you meet people. A lot of police stations now have “online transactions” areas in the parking lot. It’s recorded on tv and you’re less likely to get attacked or robbed in front of a police station.

Good point, just checked and my local PD does have a designated spot in their lot for transactions.

I do about only, but strongly encourage cash. If they take a check your on the hook for it. Or so I’ve been told. Count it before they leave too!

I’ve never bothered with the spelled out phone number, you get a little spam but not bad. Only accepting cash is probably a good idea if it’s cheap enough that it’s practical. I would never feel comfortable letting someone have a test drive without me along but assuming they show up in a vehicle you have that as some insurance that it comes back. I do feel like I’ve gotten relatively lucky on Craigslist, I’ve only had one semi-bad experience and never felt unsafe.

I enjoy shopping for a car much more on craigslist than through a dealer to the point I actually find it to be an enjoyable experience. Because I’m always looking at cars much more likely to be owned by an enthusiast it’s actually pretty nice to go talk cars for a bit and drive something new even if I don’t buy it. Everyone’s usually pretty straightforward and either knows the car well or says so if they don’t. At a dealer you need to put up with someone trying to sell you something you usually know more about than them if you’re an enthusiast and did your homework.

I think the test drive with them is hit or miss. Do you want them to drive you somewhere, leave your body in the ditch, and then steal the truck anyway? I’d just photo their license on your phone and maybe take their picture too if the license doesn’t look like them.

Pre-rebadged Ranger B series? Just curious. My dad had a 2200i 4x4 HNNNNNNNNNNG

My two cents:

-do a quick search to see what that model is going for on CL in similar condition
-have in mind the price you’re willing to take (bottom price that you’d be 100% comfortable settling for)
-ask ~$300 to $500 above your ceiling price
-pray someone normal looks at your car
-let them lowball ~$700 below your asking price
-counteroffer with ~$300 below your asking price
-let him accept or counter with ~$400 below asking price
-accept offer and be done with it

Cash only, no exceptions. Anyone who can’t piece together 2Gs is not trustworthy.

Not gonna lie, really going to miss the old girl. Not sure if it’s rebadged or not but it was during the Ford/Mazda partnership: ford motor and Mazda tranny (great tranny btw) built at a ford plant in the Twin Cities.

Great info man, thanks!

Good info, thanks! I’ve done a lot of smaller transactions from the cyber and the worst so far has been no shows or people who just stop communicating. Knock on wood, I’ve been lucky too.

You’re quite right, I would be nervous about riding around with random strangers. A photo of their license and as someone else mentioned, as long as they showed up in a car, they should come back for it.

I would not get in the car if I felt threatened, usually I think it’s a good idea to go along because it could be an insurance mess if they get in an accident and you aren’t there.

I’m probably a little more sensitive to stranger danger than most of the men on here so you don’t have to be more careful than you feel is necessary :)

I test drove my last purchase around a neighborhood and the owners followed me in their car.

Don’t put up with low ballers or tire kickers; you know what you’ve got.

In all serious lots of good pictures. Take a picture of their license and the license plate of the car they arrive in.

Going with them is up to you, but it’s not necessary unless they want to ask questions while driving or there are any quirks you want to point out.

Cash only on any reasonably priced vehicle.

Expect to be given really weird trade offers; they’ll make for a good next post. I was actually offered live rabbits as partial trade on an item I sold.

I have one like half a mile from my house so it’s a total no brainier. Plus most legit buyers are put at ease when you suggest meeting there because they know a crook wouldn’t say to meet at a police station.

List it for $2, compare it to a Bugatti, make sure and list all the extras that make it worth way more than $2,000, then mention that you are selling it stock for $2,000, but you can include the after-market parts for an extra $5,000, and (above all else) make certain you misspell anything that can be misspelled while still being a correctly spelled word (i.e. breaks).
Then prepare for all the phone calls when you requested only texts (or vice versa) asking if you still have the vehicle, does it run, how many miles are on it, does it have AC... pretty much everything you wrote in the ad.

Oh, and make sure to sell it to that guy coming back in a few weeks from Saudi Arabia who will wire you the money and have his friend pick it up.
