Kinja'd!!!

It’s complicated by the fact that half of it is under that trim piece. The end game is to buy a new pre facelift trunk anyway, which I’ve already tried and failed at (got burned on an even rustier one).

I just need a good band aid fix for now until I can bring myself to spend 500+ for a new trunk (and thats before a respray). I already did a little touch up job on a smaller bubble but it wasn’t pretty so maybe I just nees tips re: how to feather and get a smoother finish. The touch up kit I have includes paint, primer, and clear.

I don’t see what choice you have.. sell it and buy a Mitsubishi mirage... it’s the only option..

it really depends on how that rust spot got started, and how that trim piece attaches. if this is the Q45t I think it is, the panel below that chrome trim spear is a separate plastic piece:

if the rust started as an external paint chip, then the best way would probably be to remove the trim pieces, sand down that area until you’ve eliminated the rust, then do a “spot” application of primer and paint. Unfortunately since it’s already bubbled and flaking, you can’t just touch it up. rust is not just iron oxide, it’s hydrated iron oxide and continues to expand and flake off even if coated with something.

I’ll give you the advice I was given here not long ago:

Throw it away and start over.

I didn’t say it was good advice.

then do a “spot” application of primer and paint.

Since there are defined edges to the panel and it’s not too big I’d guess that his best option would be to strip the whole panel section and spray it instead of attempting to blend a specific spot. Maybe?

I’ve used Hersch miracle paint and some fiberglass as a temporary patch. There is moldable epoxy too, once you grind out all the rust. But that won’t look good, I would just do it right and repaint the face like they said.

I’d love to. But coilovers come first, the bump steer is so bad that its kinda dangerous.

Steal someone else’s trunk lid.

If you’re planing to buy a new trunk lid anyways, why not just live with it?

possibly, it depends on how “ghetto” he’s willing to let it be until the permanent repair can be done.

This is why rust sucks. You pretty much have to get a new piece, or grind it down, seal it, and reblend paint in that area.

yeah IDK how to deal with it for now, maybe just remove the bubbles and paint over it so it’s slightly less obvious

Mark out a square, sand to metal, adhesion promoter, rust encapsulator, primer, paint, and if it has it, clear. Use a clear coat blender after the clear.
