I’m happy to live in Ohio now. I surfed from 1963 (8 y.o.) and last was on my board in N.C in 2000. Way back in 1977 I had my scariest encounter at the K38 location in Baja. Like most surfers we all have shark stories but this time they were aggressive because an asshole fishing on the beach had thrown the guts from cleaning fish into the water. He was chumming and could have gotten the 6 of us guys surfing that day attacked. Two 10-11 footers showed up. Two of us headed to the rocks of the point there as others paddled into the cove. The two of us watched the guys in the cove with sharks within 6 feet of getting them. The other guys got into shallow surf where they could stand and run away. We drank a lot of tequila that night in Ensenada. I took the starfish picture that same day.
Had a 7-8 footer swim under me once at Carolina Beach when solo surfing and just caught a wave in, called it a day. Had to swim out to a sand bar in Nags Head one year to let the 40-50 guys surfing there know that there was a huge hammerhead among them. I got to within yelling range on a sandbar, by the time I swam back to shore over half those surfers had passed me. Probably had about 10 encounters in my life. Some people say you have to keep calm and don’t panic, no matter how many times you are in the water with them there can always be that one time when you run into the asshole shark that could attack. It seems like the frequency has increased all over and many of the east and west coast spots where attacks have happened are all places I had surfed. It gives me chills now to think about it.

I’m lucky I don’t have to worry about that. I only have to worry about falling into the Chicago River.
