Dumb is like the human condition or something.

yeah, and gripe about the things they do and they get all uppity with “well, I hope you’ve never bought anything because it’s trucks which move everything!”

to which I think “oh great, now the truck drivers want hero worship.”

Here’s a novel concept: “Respect each other” rather than “respect me”

Goddamn how much it pisses me off the people that make brazen left turns in front of me like that! Like I wouldnt even fathom doing any action that requires someone else to slow down in order to avoid an accident. The worst are the people that do it because the light turns yellow. Like fuck, why are you more worried about a damn ticket from the nonexistent police officer than you are about possibly ending up dead in a wreck?? I couldnt even imagine how scary that would be on a motorcycle.

I mean, you gotta clear the intersection, but make sure the other guy’s stopping first...

Not that I can talk or anything ... though in my defence the kid was moving at Camry speeds, looked like he was stopping, and just continued moving at Camry speeds through the red.

Sure, clearing the intersection is the law. Hence my bit about the “nonexistent cop” but the law is not life and death. If I am supposing to jump yellows anyways, I am not exactly worried about getting pulled over for it. The cop is going to cite you for running a red at his/her discretion anyways. Rushing through it under any pretense is irrelevant. People going straight have right of way, so the left turners definitely have the impetus to wait.

The tricky part about the legalness of yellow/red light left turning is that if you didnt do it, you could end up indefinitely waiting through light cycles if there is no protected green and traffic was bad enough. So the only way to safely move traffic is to turn left after the light goes red, often times after the cross traffic light has already gone green. The fault is poor traffic design but you gotta make do.

A few days ago, this one truck was fully stopped in a driveway, and its driver looked me right in the eyeballs as he proceeded to pull out directly in front of me, putting full faith in my upgraded brakes, I guess. I was going 55 mph up until that point, but once I was stuck behind him, we crept along at no more than 25. There were no passing opportunities.

After about half a mile of this, we entered a 35mph zone, but the truck still didn’t pick up any more speed. Finally an extra lane opened up to the right, but he stayed in the left lane. He must have been turning left soon, right? Wrong. As I passed by on the right, I continued to keep an eye on him in my mirror. He remained in the left lane until I was too far away to see him anymore.

I’d like to say, “well he’s got a large vehicle, one can hardly blame him for not wanting to change lanes—safer to stay where he is.”

But: a) this is the same guy who’ll pull off a last-minute 3-lane-change without looking instead of going to the next exit and b) if you aren’t comfortable driving it... STOP DRIVING IT

Truth be told, I don’t mind passing on the right at all. That’s my default lane.

But there was a moment’s hesitation where I hoped that he would move over into the right-most lane as soon as it opened up. Nope! He just stayed in the left lane, without even justifying it via having to turn left, or maintaining a speed worthy of that lane.

If I had to do it all over again, I would have moved in front of him and slowed down to make a left turn, as that road doesn’t have a dedicated center turn lane. He would have been forced to move into the right lane or stop and wait behind me until oncoming traffic cleared. Oh well, too late now.

Neither do I... I figure if I have space to go around on the right you had room to move over. But you never know if they’re going to head right as soon as there’s an opening, so I don’t like to jump at the gaps immediately in case they do too.

Personally, I’m getting real sick of big rigs hogging the left lane here in NoVA.
