Kinja'd!!!

It’s kinda dead now. But it’s got new headlights, so there’s that. That starter wasn’t long for this world anyways.

But that’s okay, because with the $1800 that was given to me with the car, $1000 of it will be allocated to getting it running and I plan to have a local Euro shop take care of it but before I do that, I’m cleaning up a few spots of surface rust that’s allowed me to realize how useful having a random and never used dremel tool is.

Kinja'd!!!

There’s only three spots of it and thankfully they’ve not progressed far at all.

Strangely enough it’s all around the hatch though. No matter. Though I may have to remove it all together to properly touch this up.

The rust on the hood isn’t too kind but my friend will help me redo the hood when the time comes. Until then, painters tape will suffice in covering it up. I first thought about just doing the hood in gloss black but I’m not sure how that’d look. It would be much more cost effective though and easier than matching the heavily metallic paint. It’d be different. Like the optional hood on the GT3.

On the one hand, going back with a different shade on the hood is a bit tuner/boy racer, but on the other hand, as you say, matching metallics... At least if you paint the hood with a solid it won’t interfere too much with a whole-car repaint if one is ever in the cards, and looking a bit Wangan Midnight is *way* better than looking like you don’t GAF and have a crappy hood.

Progress is progress.

And it’s also a project car so I mean. People will know. I’m thinking of getting rid of all the rust, scuffing the hood and doing a filler primer/POR-15 job.

Yep. Good plan. The only thing I’d warn about is that POR15 isn’t that UV-stable, so anywhere it’s in light it’ll need a topcoat of some kind. I’m still mad at whichever rat bastard repainted my Galaxie, because it’s not repainted in Champagne... exactly. It’s something that’s a little more green, so I ordered a can of Champagne touchup that isn’t a match, and I’ve got all these little points of damage like the bad bondo spot in the left rear quarter, the paint cracking on the hood corner, paint damage near the trunk... and I can’t even buff out and go back to just the look of two layers of paint. The hood is worst - it’s got some weird brownish discoloration *as well* as the wear-through, chips, and bad clear.

I think it might be ‘80s Ford “driftwood”.

I figure go ahead and touch up with the ‘90s Ford gold which isn’t any worse of a match, and either get a color scan or plan on getting it right when I do a whole repaint.

I didn’t know about POR-15 and UV problems.....Dammit, I’m glad you told me. I guess I’m gonna need a black top coat for it then. I was just gonna go with just that as a topcoat. :/

It’s part of it being chemically active the way it is - really hard to stabilize, I think.

So that means I might as well just get rid of the rust, and prime and paint after all; but still decide if I’m gonna try and match the paint or just go with black...Damn. This screws with my plans.

I’ve not had personal experience with it breaking down in sunlight, but I’ve definitely heard about it. Not a bad idea to POR hard-to-get-to areas under the hood, but topside , you’re going to want something that goes on a little smoother, is hard-wearing, and resists UV. Unfortunately. I still endorse black, though - solid, easy to get looking right, doesn’t have to match, and anywhere it overlaps with the POR or vice-versa, you’re covered.

Plus, enough POR to do the whole top surface of the hood would be expensive, yo.
