Wider than stock wheels, and the exhaust had been opened up very nicely, too.

A few trim bits I didn’t like, but a nice car

I was told that vanity plates are bad or something. Now what am I supposed to believe?!?!??!

Certainly you shouldn’t believe whatever an FP writer tells you! :)

When I was in high school, there was an e39 m5 with the plate “1fast5" driving around north Fulton/Cobb.

I’m just jealous of anyone driving a loud, fat-tired E39 M5 in Chicago rush hour traffic, they can do whatever they want to the plates. :)

The car itself does look nice. Just not a fan of vanity plates. Instantly reduces my interest in the car and makes me want to stay completely clear of the driver. I lump the car into the “questionable mods” category and move on.

I hate about 90% of vanity plates, but once in a while one strikes me.

And this car *does* have some questionable mods, so you’re not wrong at all. The ‘///’ badge is German flag colors (I think?), the wheels are black (not a fan), and it had the M colored grille bars. Although the grille bars are something I hate because 95% of the time they’re *not* on an actual M car.

Aftermarket exhaust and lowered just slightly, too, but it sounded goooood.

Best E39's I’ve seen have been completely stock with maybe a modest/mild cat-back.

My favorite thing about the E39 M5 is just how subtle and sleek the design is. Just the right amount of aggressive features mixed into a pretty timeless design.

There was a mean local E39 with a centri on it. Aside from the wider tires, you would never guessed that it wasn’t completely stock.

That’s how I’d want mine, too - but it’s fairly rare for me to see one at all, and when I do, they usually have even more tasteless mods than the pic above. And also look like they’ve been rode pretty hard and put away wet.

My car. Wife was driving. Small tune, nothing to scream home about. Wife actually owns a +600 whp Evo8, that she drag raced back in 2005 (much less HP then). She also did a few 1/2 mile events in more recent years in her Evo. M5 is an amazing car the way it is. No  need to make more HP. As for the plate, thought it was catchy.

Nice car!  That S62 sounded soooo good.  I need to drive (own?) one of these one day...
