It was a lovely day out in the field today, 70 degrees, sunny, not a cloud in the sky.
Flight conditions were ideal on paper, very little wind, no obstructions nothing to cause alarm.
Every now and again though, a gust of wind would come up: Nothing major, like 10 mph. I guess that was enough to create special conditions around the bridge I was near in the form of a helluva downdraft that pulled my drone out of the sky from 20 feet to crashed in about 2 seconds. No chance to recover, no way to see if coming. Straight...down.
Rotors and landing gear...meh, I got replacements for those.
The power and comm wires to the camera? Crap. Looks like its back to the service center or to a local guy who I trust to solder delicate ledes back to the logic board.
I think it will fly again. It wasn’t even recording when it went down...bummer.

Did you find the black box?
That is a bummer though, hopefully your guy can sort it out.

The black box is what broke. Its only three wires to solder, but they are delicate little suckers. I think we can get it.

Thats true. In fact I was flying over water earlier in the day so it could have been worse indeed.

What model is that? I fly a dji3 pro. I feel like it handles the wind really well I’ve even flown it in some crazy high wind/gusty days. On the side I was repairing the dji drones through craigslist for a while. Watch some video and do the repairs. Trust yourself you can handle it for sure!

Yuneec Q500. Its not super stable per-se but I like the footage to price ratio. Its never been a real issue and I’ve flown it in some wind. This was a really strange wind event, just a fluke.

yeah totally get it. Only reason I went dji was my dad bought one then crashed it. I Youtubed the repair and since its similar to what I do for work I put an add out to repair others that had crashed. Ended up making offers on crashed ones when they came in for repair and a guy finally took the offer so got mine for only $250-300 with parts I had to put into it + a little time. I love flying it.

That’s a bummer. The worst I’ve had so far was a wind gust blowing it into a tree. Two props later, it was flying again.
I dread the day that it crashes big. These things are expensive to repair.

Water and drones never mix well.
