The first Tesla I buy might not be a car...

... it might be a roof:

!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!

While it doesn’t make sense to replace a perfectly good roof, the asphalt shingles on the roof of my house date back to 2007. In the next 10-15 years, those shingles will need replacing.

So if I have to replace the shingles anyway, why not replace them with shingles that have an infinite year warranty... that generate electricity for me as well?

I’d love to own a Tesla Model S... but even used 2012 Model S’s are WAY over my car budget. Though in 10-15 years, there probably will be some dirt cheap used Teslas around.

Hmmm... the timing of needing my roof replaced VS the timing on Tesla used car depreciation... it’s hard to say if my first Tesla will be a car or a roof.

by the time you go to replace your roof Tesla might not be around at the rate they are going....but don’t worry there are other solar power roofing options.

What Tesla isn’t publicizing is that solar or PV panels only put out peak power when they are in direct sunlight and are placed at the optimum angle which corresponds with your latitude. It’s highly likely that if you are far north and have a shallow sloped roof you may never see peak output.

There’s also little to no point in putting PV panels all over your roof as the north-facing ones won’t pull their own weight. PV companies like to sell them to sheeple that don’t know better but you’re just wasting money.

I’ve seen the other solar roof options... most of the time, it’s panels stuck in an ugly frame that is stuck on the roof and looks like shit:

compared to what Tesla is selling:

Here is another instance were tesla is far from innovation and more just copying people or using existing stuff and marketing it well There are several other products like this http://www.zepbv.com/general/photos/

Solar still doesn’t really help our infrastructure problem, and it doesn’t get you power when the power goes out....unless you have a battery bank and a cut off before the grid then you’re not selling back.

One thing you are overlooking is that there is nothing stopping anyone from installing solar shingles where they are best suited and regular ones in other places like was done on this house:

Anyway... if someone has the money, wants a uniform look and wants the infinite year warranty covering all shingles on the roof, why not?

It’s no more or less of a waste than many other expensive home upgrades like granite counter tops, in-ground pools, hot tubs, etc.

As you probably know, Tesla got into the solar game by buying Solar City. And Solar City has been around since 2006.

Meanwhile the company you linked has only been around since 2013 .

So who is really copying whom?

Having said that, to varying degrees, ALL companies reuse at least some existing ideas and use some stuff that pre-existed them.

And I’m pretty sure that Solar City never made the solar cells themselves. They probably work with some 3rd party to get the resulting product they wanted.

The unique thing Tesla seems to be doing is having better marketing (as you mentioned) and also better integration/implementation (combining better marketing, with complimentary products like the power wall, along with installation).

Don’t underestimate the value of good integration/implementation.

A good product that is poorly integrated or poorly installed can suck no matter how good the product itself is.

One other thing... I have far more confidence in Tesla being around in the long run than most of the other much smaller companies doing solar roofing installs.

Tesla bought solarcity to bail out Elon Musk.

The company i linked to was the first one i found I know there are even more out there doing this. Tesla is all hype.

“Tesla bought solarcity to bail out Elon Musk...

Tesla is all hype..”

Yeah... that’s what some say... mainly because the company was started by two cousins of his.

Tesla OBVIOUSLY did NOT merge with Solar City because of it being the largest provider of solar energy services or that it would compliment the PowerWall business. That OBVIOUSLY was not on Musk’s mind.

AAANNND... Musk clearly has NO intention of combining the two complimentary products (PowerWall + Solar) with the idea that it could lead to higher growth overall due to being able to offer complete end-to-end energy solutions.

Nuh uh... can’t be that at all.

Musk only does things for Crony Capitalist Hype purposes.

The company is ALL HYPE. The don’t make any real products... no sir... even their cars are vapourware... and the Teslas I see on the road are all in my imagination due to all the TESLA HYPE!!!

What was on Musks was the fact that he was the largest shareholder of a company that was circling the drain. Elon converted a bunch of Solar City Notes to Tesla Shares and was going to owe big time on them, in order to prevent having to pay anything he used Tesla to buy the Solarcity .

And now Musk is continuing basically just stealing taxpayer money:

“stealing taxpayer money”

LOL... Put down the crack pipe. Running a business that takes advantage of government incentives relating to energy efficient tech isn’t stealing taxpayer money any more than government funding go-nowhere hydrogen car research is.

As for Solar City “going down the drain”... the company expanded too quickly in 2015 and as a result, had to trim their workforce in 2016.

In reality, while they were losing money on paper, those losses are directly attributable to very aggressive expansion. The revenue growth shows this:

https://amigobulls.com/stocks/SCTY/income-statement/annual

And the biggest point in the article:

“most Americans live in their house less than a decade before they end up selling it and moving to a different roof, which means that the vast majority of Americans who end up buying the new Tesla product offering will have moved out of their home long before the investment pays back for itself.”

... is absolutely RETARDED. As if it’s Tesla’s or any company’s fault if a consumer moves before they get the full benefit of any home improvement they make. And as if this WON’T be listed as a feature of the house when it goes on sale where the seller gets at least some of the money invested back.

Man... you’re really grasping at straws today...

You wanna know a VALID issue with Solar City? They expanded too quickly. But that’s not the same thing as “stealing tax payer money”. Nor is it the same thing as a company “going down the drain”.
