I’ve been looking at sales statistics for Ireland for the year to April. Unlike many other places the figures are detailed, freely available and (really important) free.

So, let’s see what comes in at the bottom of the heap. Which models have sold just one example?

These ones.

Porsche Boxster

Kinja'd!!!

Citroen Berlingo (passenger spec)

Kinja'd!!!

BMW i8

Kinja'd!!!

Jeep Grand Cherokee (yes, really. The Jeep brand doesn’t travel well)

Kinja'd!!!

Tesla S

Kinja'd!!!

Fiat Doblo (passenger)

Kinja'd!!!

Now, what cars sold 0 examples (from major brands, I mean)?

Kind of hard to work out without taking some random names and seeing if they appear! The list stops at one sale.

You sure about the Boxster? I wouldn’t imagine they sell boatloads there based on the climate but one sounds too low.

Could it be just one final 2015 Boxster before it was rebranded to the 718 or one that was mislabeled as a Boxster rather than a 718?

Strictly speaking it’s a 718 Boxster according to Porsche so I guess one is correct. There were six Caymans (or 718 Caymans if you prefer)

Here’s the link for the Netherlands. Quite a lot of 1-sale cars for April 2017. Among them the Toyota GT86, Land Cruiser, Peugeot RCZ, BMW Z4, MB SL and M, Kia Sorrento, Subaru Levorg and some others.

Interesting. The proportion makes some sense as the closed-roof is more suited for Ireland but I would’ve expected them both to sell better.

Not a single Z4 or Subaru Levorg here. Three GT86s and just two Twingos (there’s no interest in small three door hatches here)

But...457 Sorrentos. It’s becoming compulsory to buy SUV type things.

355 new Twingos in April 2017 in the Netherlands.

We don’t really do Korean crossovers, especially large ones.

There’s almost no interest in two seater sports cars. The best seller is I think the MX5 which did only 32 and I’m surprised it’s that high as you very rarely see them.

Individual countries show huge variations in what they buy. In the UK for example they share some of the Dutch love of small three doors so the Fiat 500 has been at about no 10. Here it barely exists (no 123 for this year).

To go a little further field, the Swedes bought just one Scirocco so far in 2017, five Toyota Mirais, two Cadillac Escalades and two RR Wraiths. Not a single Twingo though. Figures here but you need to do a bit of work by selecting opening and closing dates (the first two columns)

The lack of Twingo sales is odd to me. I’m not the biggest fan, but still. It’s an inexpensive, competitive, fuel efficient (and thus relatively clean) car by a major manufacturer. It doesn’t have to be a sales hit, but zero or only two sales?

The Scirocco has been discontinued years ago in my native the Netherlands. You can’t get new Jettas for some time now either, but then again the only non-premium compact sedan that are available are the Mazda 3, Ford focus and Fiat Tipo. The latter two I’ve never seen as sedans (current gen).

I can explain the lack of Twingo sales in Sweden - just go here and see the list of personbilar that should appear. No Twingo (although they have the Twizy for some reason!).

The Clio sells quite well there.

As for the two sales in Ireland - it’s a small two door car of limited practical use. Pay another few euro a month and you can get a proper car like a Clio.

do you mean passenger as in has seats and not a cargo van, or is passenger a trim level?

Passenger as in rear seats and windows. Van versions - which are more common - appear in their own statistics.

Ah, in the US, for the small vans we only have the transit connect.
